Kuwait marked the 10th anniversary of its liberation from Iraqi occupation Sunday, joined by former U.S. President George Bush and former British Prime Minister John Major.
Iraqi troops overran Kuwait in August 1990 and were driven out by a Western-Arab coalition in February 1991. The weekend events mark a double celebration for the tiny, oil-rich Persian Gulf emirate,
which marks the 40th anniversary of independence from Britain on Sunday and the liberation anniversary on Monday. Bush and retired U.S. Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf arrived on Saturday, along with Major
and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, who was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the Persian Gulf War, flew into Kuwait on Sunday.
