Comic voting, improved comic posting in the forums, and comic viewing on by default now. Read my next post for more details.

- There is now a very basic comic voting system. Like the member rating system, which has been working pretty well, only donors can vote on comics. You can't yet see any comic ratings, but that'll be along once there are a few votes in the database.

- You should now be able to just post the URL of a comic in a forum post and it will automatically get converted to a comic (without using the comic tags). There is at least one bug I've noticed with this that I'm working on fixing, but it works for the most part, so it's online anyway. This will hopefully make it easier for new users to post comics without having to do anything special.

- Comic viewing in the forum is on by default now. We've been doing okay in the bandwidth for a while, so I thought I'd flip this. If you already have an account, you still have to switch it in your account settings, but new users will see comics by default now.

As always, Brad, you rock.

Can we get the voting control added to random.php? Don't know how hard this would be. But I promise to use it if you implement it.

How does each vote affect the comic? Is it bad = -1, okay = 0, and good = +1? Or does okay = +1 and good = +2? Mostly I want to know whether my "okay" vote is neutral, or positive but less so than "good".

The what mentioned above is total fiction. Please don't take it seriously!

Good = 10, okay = 5, bad = 0.

I'm not sure if I'm 100% on this method, there may be a better way. I'm also not sure if it's worth having three options. Maybe all there really needs to be is a "this is funny" button. My logic for doing it this way is that it's easy to drop all the okay and bad votes at some later point if need be.

Voting in random.php is a good idea, I'll do that.

This is too much like: "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" for me. If we all followed this example, we wouldn't have had most* of the super wars of the last century. I say that if a comic is crappy, it should be rated less than zero, of course, I just like being a complete twat.

*(the latest Gulf war actually being about Saddan Hussein's fascist comic voting system)

Well, getting a zero will negatively impact the score of a comic. If you give a comic a 10 and I give it a 0, the score of the comic is 5. So it all kind of works out. I'm just not sure if there should be "bad" voting because it adds a level of politics. ie. people voting stuff down because they want their comic to be higher.

But as long as I'm keeping it to donor-only voting, the maturity level will probably stay somewhat high.

I like zero as the worst rating. The greatest insult on the Internet is not to be insulted, but to be seen to be ignored.

Also, what everyone else said. The new system is cool - cheers, Brad.

Maybe a second stat showing if the average vote value one user puts on your comics(after having votes on 5 of yours) is greater than the average votes that user has given all comics in general(after having voted on 10 other comics), +1 point if yes, -1 point if no, 0 if it is within 1.

Example:
I vote good on 2 of big evil dan's comics, and 3 okays on 3 other comics of his, making that average (5+5+10+10+10)/5 =8, and on 10 other comics I gave 5 goods and 5 okays, making that average 7.5. Thus, he gets 0 points from me until I vote good on 2 more of his comics, giving him an average of 8.51, thus greater than 8.5, thus giving him 1 point.

That way any one registered user can only effect comics by one point, and to do so he has to vote down some other comics, and thus there could be a "most popular users" list without TOO much stripcreator politics. Since it's a popularity contest, it's based on how many people vote for you, not what they give you.

For top comics, instead of a list, you could have a "random top comic button" which shows comics with 8 or higher score randomly, removing most politics, basically allowing stripcreators to make a "playlist" of good comics.

I suggest for voting we filter all scores through a chaos-negation matrix, then take the aggregate remainders and feed them into a Nixon-era Univac computation machine. The product of the sums divided by the exponential variance will then provide the constant rate of change, heretofor referred to as "s". We will then release artificial intelligence personas (created by the mapping of the neural networks of the donors)in a subspace fighting chamber (which, as you know, can easily be maintained on any cpu with fractal/lightwave encoded nano-circuitry with a hyper-conduit fluidity rating 5.5 or higher)and let them fight it to the death. The winner of each bout will go up a rank, with random wild card placements for variety's sake, until a winner is declared. We then use the coding from the respective user's DNA, plug Stephen Hawking into a Texas Instruments 5000 I Series Calculator and Day Organizer with the music of Mozart playing in one of his ears and Bobcat Goldwait reciting the plays of Euripedes in the other, and the number that shows up on the tiny LED screen will provide us with the other half of the equation. We then add these numbers together, multiply them by half the square root of the sum, then divide by zero.

That, I think, will be the easiest way to get a true, honest reading of what comics don't suck so bad.

Or we could throw everything into a black hole and see what gets crushed first.
Whatever gets crushed first must suck, as things that suck attract eachother. Black holes suck, Fuck's comics suck. They'd be like weird lovers or something. I'm tired. I'm going to bed.

Could you please program a way for users to edit their comics once they are posted? It's really frustrating once you realize that you fucked up and there's nothing ya can do about it. I mean, you guys come up with all this ratings shit, why can't you make a comic editing option?

Stripcreator people need this.

Hey programmer dudes (or dudettes), I was just thinking...if programming an editing script is too much for y'all to handle, an option for DELETING a strip from your collection would also work. That can't be too hard now, can it? V. good. I trust in you.

Please change your attitude. I find it rather agressive and annoying.
