I like fpd's categorical approach, and I will bogart it to my own ends:

Favorite movies about robots:
Bladerunner
Metropolis
Terminator 2
Robocop
Favorite movies about convicts:
The Shawshank Redemption
Malcom X
American History X

Favorite space operas:
Star Wars

Favorite superhero movies:
Sin City (gives me renewed hope for a Rodriguez-made "Madman" picture.)
The Hulk
(Usually superhero movies turn out to be letdowns, but this one appeals to me because the director has a unique understanding of comics. Also check out the Ice Storm to see his take of the Fantastic Four in a monologue by Toby Maguire. Ang loves the same thing I do about a good comicbook, which is what they mean and convey about the creator's mindset. Another person with an excellent comicbook mind is Quentin Tarantino. David Carradine's "Clark Kent" speech at the end of Kill Bill [a movie which I thought sucked] nails the essence of Superman while putting it in a light I never saw it in before. He understands the alien nature of Superman and it's too bad he didn't get to have a hand in the new movie.)

Favorite romantic comedies:
Eternal Sunshine on the Spotless Mind
The Music Man

Favorite cartoon movies:
Princess Mononoke
My Neighbor Totoro
Akira
Finding Nemo
American Pop

Favorite Neo-Noir:

Memento
One Hour Photo
History of Violence

I know it's a boring list, but it is accurate.

It was such a waste of everyone’s time and money that even the Tokyo stadium’s rape robots apologized– something they were programmed specifically never to do.

I'm glad someone else likes that movie. I don't know about you, but any movie that starts with the earth getting blown up is a winner to me.

I found it on DVD recently. In the BARGAIN BIN. I was outraged, but not outraged enough to refuse to buy it with a $5 price tag.

I found Dark Crystal and Titan AE in the $5 bargain bin at Walmart. I bought them because I'm too cheap to spend $20 anywhere else.

Dark Crystal is one of those movies everyone likes that I will never like. I've watched it about 5 times now, and it just keeps getting worse every time.* I don't understand.

Titan A.E. is really awesome though.

*The first time I almost finished it, the second time I got halfway through, the third time I got to the 15 minute mark, etc.

Bargain Bin movies are awesome, especially when they're just good movies that have gotten old enough for production costs to have been paid for a few times over in the theater and from home video sales.
The only real reason to pay $20 for a movie is if it's something that you just *have* to see again right on the day it comes out.
Otherwise, Netflix.

No, the Iron Giant is an animated film. A cartoon is cartoony. Cartoons have no sense of reality to them and use cartoony animation. Cartoon characters can fly through walls, have anvils dropped on their head, pull holes from their pockets and get hit the ass in every way imaginable.

Loonie Tunes, Fleischer (Betty Boop ect.), Mickey Mouse, Ren and Stimpy, and most Hanna Barberra (Yogi Bear yes, Johnny Quest not so much). There are very few modern animated shows that are really cartoons.

So then the Three Stooges were non-animated cartoons?
