i've been enjoying the comics contests, and the cup is fun to watch (all i've done so far), but i've been thinking a bit, and i wonder if there isn't a cooler, more definitive way to determine the creme de la creme.

what i've in mind is close to the comics cup, but with specific entry guidelines--basically, it would be an eight-stripper tournament bracket, where the pool is made up of the last 8 CC winners. thus, the CCs are sorta like a "regular season." 8 CCs take about a month, so there's a new sovereign crowned that often. like the CCs, the winner of each tournament would supervise the next. if, during the course of eight CCs, the same stripper won twice, that person could nominate the eighth competitor (although the nominee couldn't face the nominor in the opening round).

if anyone has ideas about judging, rule generation and things like that, let me know. if you think the whole idea is "pants," let me know that too. it just seems like more bragging rights could be earned this way--the winner of the Comics Classic (working name) would indeed be the master of all he/she surveyed... for a month, anyway.

I like this idea, but it could take a while...

Sign up a bundle of strip authors, preferably sixteen, and over the course of a couple of months, have a one-on-one contest between everyone and everyone else. To save time, four match-ups would go on at once, twice a week, making eight matches a week - sixteen players (see my demented logic coming together?). Nobody would be eliminated, but a championship ladder would be recorded, and once everyone has been in fifteen matches (ie. played everyone else) the top four or top eight would then go into a Comic Cup type scenario.

To keep with the C aliteration theme, I would call it the Comic Creator's Championship.

Anyone like the idea?

hrm... taking that "regular season" idea and running with it. i think it's a bit overambitious, really. the problem is that the round-robin part would consist of, if my math's right, 120 separate "games." if there are gonna be that many, we'll have to have a referees' union and everything (: also, finding 16 strippers who are willing to commit to that kind of long-term competition... it might be tough.

i like the idea, though! really!

I don't think I have enough clothes to strip for that long at a stretch.

It seems like we're putting an awful lot of effort into being competative. The original contest idea was just sort of a catalyst for comic creation.

Gabe's got a point. I hate it when that happens.

Well... I think the contests have shown that competition and slightly restrictive rules can bring out a lot of funny in people. *shrug*

aww, come on. it's just human nature--find something that's fun to do, and then find a way to determine who's best at it. as long as we don't start bringing in corporate sponsors, no harm's done--haven't you seen baseketball? (:

Hey, you asked for opinions. No one said you couldn't. And no one's going to stop you from doing anything. If you think it's a good idea, just do it. The worst that can happen is it can fizzle and disappear. Give it a shot.

As long as you don't screw with the existing Comic Contest, I say you can do whatever you want. But I think Gabe is right about the Contest being not so much about competition as about jump-starting people's creativity. Then the Comic Cup was started to provide a real competition.

As for "determining who's best", I don't think you're going to find one person here who's better at making comics than any other. Spankling lost the first round of the the Comic Cup twice, then won the entire Cup the next time. Does that make him the best, or the worst? If you ask me, it makes him a guy who has some good days and some bad days, just like the rest of us.

*ahem*

I am not a guy. The rest of it is true. I've had fewer good days, lately.

I hope it can, because that's how I meant it.

I know that when I look at the comics that won me Cup II, I think they're probably some of the best I've ever done. I'm not sure what it was, but that cup brought out the best in me... moreso than the Comic Contests, IMO.

But I'll come out and admit that I think there are people on here who make a load of comics that are better overall than mine.

ehh, i guess i'll just let it go for now then. i have neither the time nor the stripcreator experience to run any sort of contest, i don't think--especially not one that would be such an ubercompetition. besides, two concurrent contests is okay for now, ja? thanks for your input, all. (:

Did you know your name is 'Men? Bah!' backwards? Only without the implied punctuation?

well, gabe, actually i didn't. it's in fact supposed to be an abbreviation for habakkuk nehemiah, though come to think of it, i don't generally like men that much.
