I also hated the Dessau Bauhaus school for years for all of the loathesome little concrete bunkers that they gave genesis to with their "new style" meanderings, but then I actually went back and looked into it, a bit. There was some beautiful stuff that came out of there. And a lot of dreck. Just like Epic Records. The fact that they should have been shot for trying to make anything over 12 storeys high is another matter

The problem wasn't this pack of mavericks sitting about in Dessau, Germany - trying to marry the age of the machine to the architectural environment that it was changing - it's the fault of cocksmoking, weenie-assed contractors and hack architects who figured out that you could knock up septic tank with a pole barn roof on top; so long as you put a few windows in it, hung some aluminum siding on it, and glued a few Georgian or Italianate finials to the porch.

Oh, I think you're giving Postmodernists too much credit by associating them with mere brutalism and cheapness. Sure, your run-of-the-mill high-rise Postmodern condo is made of poster board and Elmer's glue, and slapped together by men whom you would literally shoot if you saw them near your daughter, but I am talking about the Big Important Projects you see in magazines. These architects know what they are doing, and they like confusing you. "OMG, that stairway was so disorienting, I threw up." That's what they call "whimsy." Architecture to them is a way of stabbing you in the eyes without using a knife, and then brutalizing whatever senses you have left. Oh God how I hate them.

I'm not exactly sure where the trend started of assaulting your eyes and your senses with architecture, but I don't get it. Is it supposed to shock you into some state of zen where your perception zeroes out and you can then appreciate the architecture's purpose?

Because it seems to be that a bunch of pansy, parental-funded, laissez-faire architects and a gaggle of hairy contractors "with feelings" are getting together, drinking concrete and sand, eating cases of Barnes & Noble art deco books, and taking a shit on some prime property.
