By kids I meant the children produced by their union. If there was any wrongdoing it was Letourneau getting pregnant and keeping the children. Having sex with a thirteen year old is one thing, but forcing him to be a father is another.

I think that the biggest problem with this whole story is that if it had been a male teacher having sex with a female 13 year old student, people would be crying for his balls to be cut off. But because it's a female teacher and a male student it seems to not be as serious a crime, which it is. It may not be as bad as, say, molesting a 3 year old or something, but 13 years old *is* still a child. As such, she should have kept her hands off (and stayed with the man she was married to) until he was legally able to consent. But then to be released, re-offend, AND get pregnant not once but twice to me is unforgivable.

I've never considered 13, 14, 15, 16, or 17 year olds to be nieve. They know what they're doing or at least what they want, especially males, when it comes to sex. Most states say the law of consent is between 14 - 16. Now I'm not advocating breaking the law, but I am saying that just because it's the law, doesn't mean that they don't know what they were doing and that they were being corrupted. Please, at 14 and 15, I knew exactly what I was doing and what I wanted when I was losing my virginity to a 19 year old

There IS a double-standard, yes. Makes are sexually geared earlier than females, this much we know. This is why males reach their sexual peak at the ages of 16-18 and females reach it anywhere from 30-37. That means proportionately we should have 17 year old males having sex with 30 year old females. Which is fine by me.

I agree that most of them are not naive (you'll have to excuse me I can't spell lol) but I also don't blame the child for what happened. Obviously if an older (MUCH older in this case) person shows an interest in you and makes you feel "special" as a child, or teenager, or whatever you want to call it, you aren't going to hesitate to weight the moral and ethical debates in your head. I think that as an adult, she had a responsibility to stop and consider her actions and the fault lies entirely with her. Being an adult, and especially being a teacher (I say especially because in that line of work you get to know kids a bit better than the average person and you get to understand how they think, feel, etc) she should have known better and not taken it to the place it went. Whether or not the 'child' was mature enough to handle a relationship of a sexual nature with an older person is, at least to me, irrelevant. The only point I was making was that she should have known better and should not have made herself available to someone that age. Let him experience the 'joys' of lost virginity with someone his own age, or at least with someone on the same side of the generational gap.

Oh and btw, I *do* agree with what both of you are saying, that especially for boys most of them want to have sex and will not turn down the opportunity. (Yes I think girls do too lol). And as long as they have a level of physical and emotional maturity to handle it, and are as safe as they can possibly be, I see nothing wrong with experimentation with someone their own age. Obviously, as parents, we don't want to face the fact that our children may be experiencing anything sexual at any age, but we also have to face the fact that it's going to happen. I just don't think we want to hear about it happening with our daughter's *or* son's teachers.

While you guys were all posting this back and forth, i was lecturing a group of teachers on the very topics of sexual harassment and child abuse.

I'm a guy, so i get what mikey and atheist are saying, but speaking as the guy who would have to defend the school district if one of our teachers did this, i can absolutely say what le tourneau did is wrong.

anytime a person who has power over another uses it for their sexual gratification, it's wrong. you can't make the argument that the victim was a willing participant because most kids want to please their teachers and other adults if for no other reason than to avoid retribution.

that this kid still desires contact with le tourneau could indicate that he has been emotionally scarred by this. abuse victims often seek abusive relationships in order to relive the experience and to somehow attempt to gain mastery over the psychological damage that has been done to them. that this kid went back to her when she was released the first time and now desires to see her again could be him doing exactly this. perhaps she caught him right at the moment when his adolescent brain was forming his attitudes about sex and now he's wired this way.

finally, i'm having an employee arrested tomorrow for fraud and embezzlement. we've been asking ourselves all week how someone who makes a decent living could risk their freedom and career over a relatively small sum (we caught her on her first attempt we think). when I look at this kid, i gotta ask the same thing...is this kid so sexy that he's worth jailtime for? errr...no.

Just out of curiosity, where do you draw the line? What do you consider "sexual abuse"? Or "child abuse"?

All right, let's set the record completely straight here. There's an old saying, as bunnerrabb is quite familiar with I am sure, that when a girl is "Old enough to bleed, she's old enough to breed."

As nature goes, this is completely true and time-tested. As society goes, this is a fact of life and we try really, really hard to pretend that young girls and boys possess no sexuality. I truly , truly believe that kids should not have sex at such a young age, and even more so that adults should not sexually take advantage of these children, especially when they are in the throes of hormonal overload.

At the same time, however, what gave society the right to draw that line? This thread was created as a lark, and I really would want to bang a hot teacher when I was 13, but it IS the wrong thing for that teacher to do. But it got me thinking that maybe we really need to revamp the ways we deal with teenage and adolescent sexuality. If we can somehow accept it and nurture it without exploiting it and actually making (or letting) kids have sex, then maybe there won't be such issues in the future. God knows that as kids we all snuck looks at tittie movies and penis magazines and Skinemax dance-fucking. There is obviously something there that we as a society are failing to address.

Choad is right that children should not be taken advantage of. And in his position, there is not much room for any other stance. I agree with it myself.

But as for the double-standard, here is why it is worse for an older male teacher to seduce a younger female student:

Rape. Rape is classically and statistically a crime by males against females, unless it is prison, and then all bets are off. Males have a statistical tendency to take advantage of females in a sexual sense. Rufies, date rape, and all such similar crimes are usually perpetrated by men against women. A male teacher having sex with a female student is worse because, in our minds, that male definitely took advantage of that female student. Have we not heard this story many times before? The fact that on average females get raped by males more than any other variation of gender-rape, makes it more horrible and easier to believe when a male teacher has sex with a female. Men take advantage of women sexually.

That's not to say that women do not do the same, at all. But men are less likely to realize they've been taken advantage of, and nine times out of ten, they think they're the ones who took the advantage.

It's fucked-up, but it's true.
