Garfield put carrots in his ears because his ears are a sort of juicer than when you put foodstuffs in them it makes them into juice. When you turn his tail, fresh juice comes out of his ass. Jon was merely upset that Garfield wasn't using this wonderful gift to help out Religious convents, and was merely suggesting that Garfield do so.
