Can I start a parallel thread to go with the one DexX started? Can I? Please? Ok then.

Imagine your desert island record player is stuck on 45rpm. which ten songs would you take with you (singles or album tracks)? I think I'd be packing . . .

1. Neil Young - Unknown Legend
(I have to listen to this every morning on my way to work, or I won't bother turning up.)

2. Smokey Robinson - Being With You
(Reminds me of my childhood. One of the smoothest tunes I ever heard.)

3. The Beatles - For No One
(Gets me every time.)

4. Otis Redding - Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay
(Those seagulls and that voice.)

5. Michael Jackson - One Day In Your Life
(Beautiful song.)

6. Frank Sinatra - Under My Skin
(My desert island, saturday night karaoke song.)

7. Yes - Starship Trooper
(For when I want to lie back in a pair of flared pants and contemplate never being rescued and not caring.)

8. Chaka Khan - I Feel For You
(For when I want to get down with my bad self in solitude.)

9. Led Zeppelin - Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
(For the bit where Robert Plant says 'babe, babe, babe, babe, babe, babe, baby'n'baby, i'm gonna leave you.')

10. Bob Dylan - Ballad Of A Thin Man
(Bob exerting total authority here. I defy anyone to write a cooler song than this.)

The Pixies, Beefheart, James Brown, Black Sabbath, Nick Drake, Isley Bros, Grandmaster Flash, The Doors, Johnny Cash and Frank Zappa all missed out by the skin of their teeth here. What's your selection?

Just the one would've sufficed.

No fair. We've all goofed up on threads, and it needs to sit there as a reminder of your goofness. It'll go away soon enough. Considering someone doesn't post to it.

In regards to albums...

I'd take just about anything. Preferably 33s. 'Cause then I could listen to all of them and pretend they were Alvin and the Chipmunks.

When you only get 10 slots you gotta leave some favorites out. It hurt but it had to be done.

01 - "I Want To Hold Your Hand" - The Beatles (Pure pop and timeless.)

02 - "Wouldn't It Be Good" - Nik Kershaw (A tale of crushing misery you can dance to. Hoowah!)

03 - "There She Goes" - The Las (Perfect jangle pop.)

04 - "In Your Eyes - Live" - Peter Gabriel (A brilliant song about devotion that has yet to be eclipsed.)

05 - "Cuyahoga" - R.E.M. (The best single from their best album ever.)

06 - "Tonight" - The Raspberries (Eric Carmen at his peak. Crap, over-compressed drum mix and all.)

07 - "Look Through Any Window" - The Hollies (The first record I ever bought.)

08 - "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" - the Temptations (This song kicks ass.)

09 - "Sometime In The Morning" - The Monkees (One of the worst production jobs ever. I think it was mixed by a deaf-mute gopher, but it's a killer song.)

10 - "Wouldn't It Be Nice" - The Beach Boys (Just beautiful, man. Beautiful.)

I'll take a song by each of my desert island artists from DexX's thread:

Simon and Garfunkel - I am a Rock
Cypress Hill - Illusions
The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist
Pantera - Regular People
Mozart - Lachrymosa
The Presidents of the United States of America - Little Puffy Shoes
Rammstein - er...I'll come back to this one
Bill Hicks - Rockers Against Drugs Suck
Vangelis - Rachel's Song
Beach Boys - I'll go with bunner here: Wouldn't it be Nice

Oh yeah, Rammstein - Spieluhr. Just to laugh at, though. I don't actually like it or anything.

My goodness, crabby... I thought I was irrepressibly geeky when I liked a stack of your list in my teens, over a decade ago. Now, here you are at the start of the new millennium, and _you_ like them. Wow... I would take my hat off to you if I ever wore one. It takes some balls to be young, surrounded by peer pressure, but be a fan of what is good, rather than what is new and trendy.

I have to say, though - Paul McCartney solo, I would take Maybe I'm Amazed over No More Lonely Nights any day, and from his Wings period, Band on the Run or Live and Let Die would make it into my collection before Silly Love Songs which, I must admit, I find a bit tiresome.

I will actually contribute to this thread after some thought. I own very few singles, a grand total of one 45 (Paul McCartney, My Brave Face) so it would be a single hypothetical CD-R of burned tracks in my imagination, rather than pile of 45s.

Fuck the Creationists isn't his best. Entropy has both the phattest lyrics and the funkiest tune.

This thread reminded me of a guy in his fifties that used to work in the music department at Borders with me. He had about a 50,000 album collection in his basement. When he mentioned that, all I could think of was the massive hernia he was going to get if he ever moved and had to lift all those fucking boxes.
