I quickly slapped together the oft-requested comic search engine:

http://www.stripcreator.com/search.php

I haven't bothered to write the paging yet, so it just limits you to 50 returns per search so that things don't get out of hand.

There's nothing too fancy about it, but it works for simple text queries. No exclusional searches or anything though. I looked into that stuff and it was going to require way more work and database usage than I can really justify.

Also: I'm watching to see how hard all this searching hits the database. It may prove too intensive and I may have to remove the function. We'll see. Just warning you guys. Live in fear!

I never thought I'd use this moronic word, but kewl!

Fact fans:
"Antidisestablishmentarianism" appears in only one comic.
Some guy called "calvin" has made strips about William Hague! I'm not the only one!
9 of the 13 comics mentioning the biscuit game are by me.
Osama bin Laden appears in 15 comics.
45 comics refer to hentai.
Three of Kevin Keegans Perm's comics mention me.
The first comic to mention "all your base" was this one:

166

Only 50 comics contain "all your base are belong to us" and "sex"? I suppose it probably only returns up to 50 results.

18 replies to "Enema". Only Boorite has ever used that word in more than one strip

"Bin Laden" returns 39 strips. It appears we are no longer topical.

Nobody has mentioned Evil Knievel yet.

Kaufman has written 4 strips called "Blatantly Ripping Off Obijo's 'Mad'"

Dr Pedantic has only 5 strips , there are in excess of 50 mentioning "Pedantic"

Oh. And the reason Andy is the source of 3 comics (and probably will be more should i get a chance) is that hes something of a celebrity round here , and normally you have to take the piss out of celebrities behind their backs.

A thousand thank yous for implementing this, Brad. Don't take it away if it strains the database, just ask us for more money. Better yet, make it a subscriber-only feature, like deleting. Mwa ha.

Of course, now I can't remember any of the things I wanted to search for. I did discover that my long-held monopoly on references to Descartes was shattered a couple of months ago.

Not sure if this is a bug or a feature: I tried searching for my nick, and got 50+ results, including genuine instances, but also including occurences of phrases like "evil demon" and such. Evidently a space and an underscore were judged to be similar. I put a space on either side of my nick and tried again; that seemed to work better. Try it yourself if I'm not making any sense.

Seems to be working out okay right now, but I'll be keeping that in mind. Glad you like the feature.

I'm not sure what's up with the underscore. However I'm doing a fuzzy search instead of an exact one, so it'll find words inside of other words currently (ie. a search for 'side' will return comics with 'inside', 'beside', 'aside' and so on).

I have an "exact match" option in the script but I couldn't get it working properly before I went to bed last night. Maybe I'll take another shot at it tonight.

As long as I'm pushing my luck....

1. You should update the FAQ.

2. What about a feature that allows us to narrow the search by specifying which panels have which backgrounds or which characters are in which positions? I bet this would be easy with SQL, but I say that only because I don't know SQL myself.

But, again, thank you.

i was gonna suggest the character part of number 2 aswell, merely so i could look at all the comics made by non-forum-users with skagg in them

I like how whenever I add things I make other things obsolete. It's fun.

I have another rough search engine around somewhere that does this. I wanted to integrate the two together in order to make one really nifty search page, but I've been unable to think of a really rad way to do it that would let you search for text as well as characters and backgrounds in certain positions. Most of the trouble is in designing the search query page in a way that isn't too insane to understand. The database stuff isn't too hard, it's all the lame interface.

Could I just point out that the word "cornhole" first appeared in comic number 10, on the 7th January?

Funnily enough, it was used as someone's name, rather than a verb.

An interesting search function would be to see who has you on their list of favourite authors.

Though bunnerabb was the first person to use the word "pedantic" in a comic, on January 25th, Dr. Pedantic first appeared on March 16th in a comic written by wirthling.

Obsequious Oscar has made a mere two appearances -- well, two correctly-spelled appearances, at any rate.

Even Mr. Sticks-His-Dick-in-Your-Ass-While-You're-Looking-the-Other-Direction can beat that, with three.

The Non-Sequitur Donkey is only named once, though I seem to recall the last dialogue box of that strip being the inspiration for a Comic Contest.

We seem to owe a number of our recurring characters to Scyess. Shame he's been missing since July.

Apostrophes must be backslashed.

I've found a small problem. When you make a search and one of our comics without a title comes up, you can't click on it from there because there's no link to click.

What I did:
I was messing around and typed in "meow". ObiJo's most recent comic came up, but there was no link to click because he had inserted a space as the title.

I hope that's clear enough to understand. Not that it matters anyway, just thought I'd bring it up and make everyone aware.

I don't know why people are forcing comic strips to be untitled in the first place. Writer's block? Novelty? Shy? I don't get it.

Obi made it a rule in a Comic Contest, and now everyone's doing it. As far as I know, it's not a bug.

While I'm a big fan of the idea that a work should be able to stand on its own merits without a title, I'm an even bigger fan of being able to find the comic I'm looking for in a list, so I still usually title my strips.

You should be able to work around this by replacing any comic titles which contain nothing but whitespace with a non-breaking space or two before printing them out as search results. Or, if you're lazy, just replace all whitespace characters in titles with an nbsp. Either method should work.

Oh, I can do it, I had just noticed it around and was wondering what was going on and had been meaning to ask someone for a while.

It really doesn't matter much in the actual comic list, but in the comic displaying in the forums and in the search feature and a few other places, it gets kind of ugly. And also it looks broken to me, which makes me look like a chump.

Or you could just view the source of the search page and find the link. But that's a bit fiddly.
