No, this thread isn't about Rosie and the hand thing.

My son and I are off to Goodwill today, to unload a bunch of crap I didn't sell at my moving sale and see what brand new clothes we can find for him. They give you a 20% off coupon when you donate stuff, and I have a mailer good for 35% off today.

Seriously, second-hand shops are da bomb. We found a brand new System Of A Down tee shirt for him about a month ago (featuring Mesmerize) for like $2.50. My sister won't be caught dead in a second-hand shop. She will charge away at JC Penney or Kaufman's instead. Anyone else shop second hand?

SOAD is like 4 years old. Even if its brand new its no better than wearing a Toto shirt from the 80's. In fact its worse.

I'll buys Games second hand and other electrical items granted they are in good condition.. but clothes... I dunno. Unless they were never worn. Something about wearing another man's clothes just doesn't appeal to me.

But then again if it's for a good cause which they usually are then I might make an exception.

I can't bring myself to buy anything at second-hand stores. I don't know what it is, but nothing there appeals to me. A lot of my friends shop there, and find great things, but ... I just can't do it.

I've found some excellent bargains at second hand stores, there's a load of them round about where I live, catering for the Seth Cohen-alike indie market.

Also: Kaufman has a store?

I go to those stores for furniture, back before I started sleeping with someone who had real furniture. I never liked the idea of second-hand underwear though. No matter how much it gets washed, I would probably still think about where it had been.

I bought a nice tweed jacket, a complete suit (it's gawdy, but so awesome), and a Hugh Hefner-style robe at a second hand store once. All of it cost less than 20 bucks.

Crabby - Mesmerized was just released late last year. And for a teenager, he has some very cool tastes in music, and collects/wears tees or hoodies such as Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, etc.

K vs K - My son likes that very look. We found a pair of Abercrombie & Fitch jeans and some very cool cords for him today, also a few computer games. BTW, Kaufman is bigger than anyone realizes :D

Ivy - Agreed; I would never even touch used underwear.

Right, buying them at Target is a garantee against any bacteria. I mean those children from the sweatshop probably didn't actually *DO* anything to those clothes before they sent them to the store, and its unlikely some creepy guy with skin eczema tried them off before you came there.

Good luck!

Today's Friday, it's the normal day that I go to Goodwill to go shopping. If time permits, I'll be browsing there today.

There's absolutely NOTHING wrong with buying clothes at these places (agreed about the used underwear, though - why do they even put it out there? A new pack is like $5/6). A new suit jacket bought at J.C. Penny = $45. The SAME suit jacket, worn maybe once or twice by someone who needed it for a job interview or to "be taken seriously" at Goodwill = $1.50.

Furthermore, ANYONE who buys ONLY new clothes for their baby (through 5 years, the fastest growing years) is STUPID, and I'd like very much to be their friend so they might buy me things too. I don't buy my son's clothes at Goodwill because they mostly only have clothes for little girls, but I do pass along ALL of my son's clothes to anyone I know with a boy younger than Travis, and gratefully accept donations from other friends and family members.

True Chicka Fact # 2094: I wore my older brother's hand-me-down jeans when I was 3-7.

I love LP shopping at Goodwill. The prices are so low (usually $0.50) that I'll load up on supercheese from the 70s/80s like Olivia Newton-John and Rod Stewart's "Blondes Have More Fun."

And occasionally, you'll actually find something cool like Neil Young's "Time Fades Away" or David Bowie's "David Live."

Oh yeah, I've found a lot of great LPs at flea markets and the like. Beefed up my Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Joe Walsh, and Black Sabbath collection for about 50 cents apiece. Some hadn't even been opened.

All our good LPs were destroyed in a flood in '83. I've been hounding the flea markets mostly to get the collection back, especially my mom's Moody Blues and Johnny Cash collection. Some I pick up extra. Cause I wasn't allowed to listed to Black Sabbath when I was four.

Or at all until I was 18. Or anything else harder than Willie Nelson.

I spent most of my early youth listening to my grandma's copy of Willie's "Stardust." That, Ricky Nelson, and the Beach Boys' car songs (and the Grease soundtrack, come to think of it) shaped my 2-5 year old musical world.

And back then, I thought she would have fun, fun, fun until daddy took the teaboard away. Which made no sense, because why would a board with tea on it be so much fun? I puzzled over that one for years.

We didn't have LPs for our Beach Boys albums. We had these newfangled reel-to-reels.

Dad's Beach Boys and Dolly Parton collection was on reel-to-reel. Mom had the Moody Blues and Willie Nelson on LP.

Then we discovered casette tapes. Man, that was a great day...

Because it's related, I thought I'd share this article about a shopaholic woman:

CLOTHING DONATION UP FOR GRABS AT RESALE SHOP
The National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW) has received a donation of more than 6,000 never worn items with everything from Liz Claiborne to Pierre Cardin to Croft and Barrow in sizes 6 and 8. It's all up for grabs at their resale shop. Only half the donation is out on the floor, and volunteers have more to sort through. Employees of the resale shop tell us if you're a 6 or 8 size, you're in luck. The NCJW Resale Shop is located at 8612 Olive Blvd in University City (at McKnight, just east of I-170). Call 314-692-8141 for more information.

You haven't mentioned 8-tracks... my dad kept them in a huge box back of his station wagon (a true woody).

Also, I got to hear Dolly Parton live at a concert. When she sang "I Will Always Love You" I got chills. Clear, high, unbelieveably sweet voice.

The only Willie Nelson song I ever liked was "You were always on my mind".

We never had 8-tracks. We used reel-to-reel and LP for so long that by the time we noticed cassette tapes, 8-tracks were long past garage sales and it was only about a two years before they came out with those clear cassette tapes. Man, THAT was a cool day. It's a music tape that's CLEAR!
