Injokester has reworked some of the older backgrounds. I think they're a big improvement, anyone have any objections? Here they are:

I agree it's a huge improvement.  The rework of clouds would make all of gabe_billings' wang jokes nonsenical, though.  Also, I don't get why the door windows have little Zs reflected in them.  But otherwise I think these background changes will make comics a lot clearer.

I like the bombs, explosion, water, rocks, planet, bushes, and house. Clouds and snowscape I'm ambivalent about.

Rather than replacing the clock, could we just add that the new one to the existing clock backgrounds? There's something funny about a clock all by itself in a hallway.

My approval spills forth like so much nectar.

Salty, salty nectar.

There are already 4 or 5 different cloud backgrounds in place so it doesn't bother me in the least if that one doesn't get changed. I was hoping to avoid changing anything that would affect people's existing work.

I was trying to make them as similar to the originals as possible, but there's only so much you can do with paint and the windows photo editor. I'm happy to re-do them in the next few days when I'm at home.

If anyone has any requests or concerns for formatting please speak up- some of the originals worked well with certain characters to create effects- such as buildings and tentacles could be combined to make it look like a huge monster was coming out from behind the leftmost building. I'm happy to modify them to fit particular characters if I can.

They look great. I like the goldfish in the background with the clock.

A bit off topic, but I thought I'd throw this one in too.

And a re-work for "field".

Hmm, I looked at all these backgrounds and I don't see Paul Westerberg in any of them. There's no truth in advertising these days!

But seriously, these are awesomesauce.

I, for one, welcome our background-improving overlord.

I like them... it just might not be a good idea if adding these changes already existing comics.

I'm just remembering what happened to a lot of my comics when Background1 got removed.

I agree. I made a comic recently with the old clock background, and having the new clock background there instead pretty much killed the visual joke. I could always switch placement on the character, I guess, but the visual joke is still dead with two receptacles. One was much funnier. Now it's sort of a "heh" instead of a "lol."

I like the new clock background, but could we have it in addition to the old clock background?

Yeah, I'm going to have to change this one to "OOOH, Goldfish!" Not as funny.

Actually...if you moved the charactor to the left side on the last panel and have him FACING the goldfish bowel as he exclaims "Hello improvisation." It brings it back a little.

Great series, by the way.

That's exactly what you see in goldfish bowls.

I thought about that, but:

1. The joke still isn't as funny. Having two background items alters the focus.

2. I shouldn't have to redo the strip (or anyone else either) because the background is now different.

3. The funnyness of the strip is now pretty dead because it's been analyzed so much and it makes me sad because it was one of my favorites.
