This site is hilarious. John Solomon calls out crappy webcomics for being crap and does so with refreshing gusto. It's also fun to read the drama he's produced in his comments section and in the forums of some of the comics he's targted (for example, one creator threatened to kill him while VG Cats fans did a failed attempt to flood his blog's comments).

I read a bit of that, and I must say the guy comes across as a self righteous prick.

I think this is a refreshing look at the world of internet comics.

I agree. I mean, one could say that webcomics are kind of like art... its all subjective with whether you like it or not. And for some guy to go on really long, expletive filled rants on why HE doesn't like certain comics, it would be like hearing someone go off on Michelangelo because they didn't quite like what he did with the Sistine Chapel.

When having a go at PvP (which I like, but I realise not everyones tastes are the same) He has an entire paragraph making fun of Scott Kurtz for being fat. What the fuck does that have to do with Webcomics?

I realize it's shitty of me to think there's a 'type' of person I'd enjoy beating up, but this guy is it. I mean, I don't know anything about comics, webcomics, fatness, or anything else mentioned in his 'blog' (another word I want to beat up), but I still get the feeling like if I met this guy I'd want to hurt him physically.

He's one of those people who can't feel good about themselves without putting someone else down.  Half of the comics he puts down are among the most popular comics on the web, which says to me that he's probably just some pompous lardo who still lives in his parent's basement because he's too pathetic to survive on his own.

I had this feeling that he's trying to do something like Mr. Cranky or Cliff Yablonski, but he's just long-winded and bitter and tedious and not funny.

I like how one of his complaints about User Friendly is that the characters aren't anatomically correct. Cause, you know, comics are always anatomically correct.

There are plenty of shitty webcomics out there, and he has every right bashing those ones. It's just noone reads those. If he wants anyone reading his blog he has to attack the popular ones.

He comes across as a self-important douchebag. Okay, so he doesn't like these webcomics. So what? That's his preference and he has every right to think so, but packaging it as as literary criticism doesn't work when he doesn't actually do any literary criticism. The least he could do is come up with some unique way of saying the comic is a pile of shit instead of spending page after page saying the same thing over and then jacking off his own ego by insisting he has credentials.

I stopped being angry at the world when I was a senior at high school, instead choosing to focus that bitterness and aggression at women who had crossed me at some point in time or were in the process of the same. This guy decided on webcomics.

In my own journalistic integrity I attack issues (when I'm being serious) from a totally unbiased perspective, being both fully knowledgable of both sides and attempting to avoid infusing any of my own opinions into any portion of my story.

But not when it comes to women. When I called my last girlfriend a sexually challenged demonic trophy bitch with no fuctioning brain capacity that was not unbiased, that was me saying she was a sexually challenged demonic trophy bitch with no functioning brain capacity. Because she is. To me anyway.

When Solomon says that he doesn't like the part of VG cats where a small rabbit with a switchblade is the equivalent of God, sure I say to myself, "Well I guess that's a bit biased, because X and Y and Z." But in his mind the aspects of these comics that are a personal affront to him are the equivalent of me getting fucked with consistenly by the self-hating bitch engines of evil and calling them out on it (possibly. It's not like I can really know, although maybe he'll tell me if he really checks the things linked to his blog as much as he says he does). Obviously he likes certain kinds of webcomics. And when comics dissappoint him the unloading begins. Then the search for high ground begins anew.

Like me dating. Except comics can't have sex with him or stab him cruelly in the back when he least expects it. A function I'm sure he appreciates.

He kinda nailed why I stopped reading Sluggy, though. I started reading it at the beginning but after about 5 years I couldn't understand what the hell was going on.

Yeah, a lot of stuff he just nails on the head.

The reason for it was explained to me as such: in the PvP forum, trolls will often start out with some kind of harsh critique of the comic itself. Then it devolves into the same troll making fat jokes about Kurtz. Solomon was lampooning this by putting all the fat jokes at the start to get it over with. Maybe it's true, maybe it isn't.

When I first read him, I thought he was going for Cliff Yablonski-esque, too. H's apparently from Something Awful, which is how some people know his email and such.

Also, he does go after smaller comics: Cartridge Comics, Lowroad, and Single Asian Female were all lesser comics that soundly deserved being bashed. It does feel like he's pandering to the crowd laterly - he even promised a MegaTokyo and Questionable Content review. A lot of people had asked for it, so I don't think his "I don't listen to you" attitude is real.

He might be funnier if he went for irony rather than outright attacks, ala Colbert. Faux sucking up might have more comedic value.
