my roommate and i agreed to learn to fence...
we agreed to spend entirely too much money on equipment and lessons, just so that at a moments notice we can whip out our phallic metaphors and go at it...
and i am literally pissing myself in anticipation...
here is what i mean:
42448
42449
42450

That's cool. I always wanted to do fencing, especialy since i quit MartialArts and my dad told me that he didn't like the spiritualism and stuff, but It'd be ok to do fencing.

Then my mom told me it was full of gay people.

The fact that you can't fight in a Florentine style with a sabre was a deliberate joke...

...right?

(Help me! DrPedantic is IN MY HEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

PS. I had a page loading error, then went back and previewed twice without my post showing up. If this double-posts I am going to say a lot of naughty words.

This issue you seem to have with gay people, have you ever had an actual conversation with one?

as is my understanding, florentine style is when you have both a saber and a dirk...
going double fisted and such...
at least my roommate, who says we should specalize in different styles seems to believe it is, and i have yet to challenge him on because he's usually right about these things.
if your quarrel is with the wording, then i apologise, i just didn't want the thing all stretched out. if florentine requires specifically something not a saber, then i'm sorry.

and i think JoshW was answering my question jeopardy style... in which case he does win $1000, but i must remind him that this week, all his winnings will go to the charity of my choosing...

I hope you have a better reason than just that. No offense to your mom or anything, but I'll bet she's not an expert on the subject of fencing. Or homosexuality, for that matter.

Anyway, I would have imagined that being a Star Trek fan would pique your interest in fencing. Didn't Picard fence all the time?

Or maybe Picard was gay, hmm? That contrived accent, those tight-fitting uniforms... it's all starting to make sense.

My god! What if the whole Star Trek franchise is homosexual propaganda? Was Data symbolic of gays in the military? What about that lesbian kiss on DS9?

This Gay Star Trek Timeline is pretty educational.

You know, the acting profession is notorious for being full of gay people. You'd probably be safer not watching any TV, movies or plays at all.

I was kidding.

Anyway, yes Picard fenced, and so did Sulu as we all remember.

Data, I think, is heterosexual, seeing as he got jiggy with that security chief that was {command:thankgod}killed off in the VERY FIRST SEASON! MWA HA HA...

But jeez, i didnt realize i made that much of an impresion about it. Dude, you are so gay for talking about it that much. I'll drop it now.

my dad said that one episode where riker fell for that asexual chick on that planet of non-sexual people, and once they found out that it liked him they took her back and deprogrammed her...
not sure how to line up my commas here so that the sentence would make sense if the comma'ed part was removed... so anyway...
that episode, as i was told by my father, was about homosexuality.

Asexual chick?? But then again, we always knew Riker was a womanizer...

Re: Florentine-style fighting

You may be right about this. Florentine does indeed involved fighting with two weapons - a larger one in the right hand and a smaller one in the left. However, I was under the impression that the larger weapon wasn't supposed to be very big - a short sword of some sort, like the viking langsax. That's how it was explained to me, anyway. However, it is named after the city of Florence, a place with a lot of fencers and duellers. *shrug*

If I can be stuffed, I'll check on Google and see what I can find.

most definitions of florentine style were as i described...
one said "rapier" instead of saber, none of the others bothered to name the weapons
