Hello everybody,

I've been posting for about a year, and I'm wondering if anyone out there could give me a critique of my strip, Vegan Dad?

They start here: http://www.stripcreator.com/comics/Porternotes

I'd appreciate it.

Thank you.

I've been reading since the beginning, or close to it.  I like your work.  I get the impression that it's a broadly accurate retelling of your actual life, exaggerated for comedic effect.  It comes across as honest, and earnest, and cynical, but also realistic.  Your comics are rarely hysterically funny -- which is expected for a serial -- but they're usually somewhat funny, and even when they aren't, they're still well-written.

In short, your comics are good and I hope you continue writing them.

I enjoyed these, I'd previously rated them 'good', probably while drunk as I don't recall doing it. Probably a good thing too, I get myself a lot of Christmas presents courtesy of drunken eBay. Mmmm... drunken eBay.

The only critique I have is that they are a bit wordy.

Is this based on your life? Some have a bit of wit to them, whereas others seem just like a comic-al retelling of something that happened to you, i.e. the "sexy look is funny" comic.

If these are based on your life, then it's all well and and good. If these are fictional, then they could be a bit sharper with the wit. Most are pretty dry, without a compelling punchline. I did like the angry mob joke though.

Keep on trucking regardless. You can only get better as you progress.

(Note: I did not read all of them, just a sampling, so there's that...)

Yeah, as a serial the stories usually build over a number of strips.

Nearly all of the stories are true or based on real experiences.

Thanks!

They don't make me laugh all that much, but as a serial story they're very entertaining.  I enjoy following them.  I would put them in the category of a daily newspaper comic in terms of entertainment value as well as quality: In that, if you drew them yourself, I think you'd have a shot at getting them published in a newspaper.

DexX graciously made all his art public domain, and you're welcome to use mine for something like that without charge - everything in Office, Injokester 1, Injokester 2 and a bunch of backgrounds in various categories. Can't help you with DexX's art, but I can supply originals of my own so you can combine them offsite to avoid the jagged edges on characters.

Send me a PM if you're serious about putting something together, I'll have to dig everything out and find somewhere to upload :)

We should maybe put together a list in the FAQ of which art is public domain.

By the way, I share HCRoyall's and Injokester's confidence in this comic.  It's consistently good enough to be a serial, and you don't seem to have trouble with writer's block.  I wouldn't expect to make a career out of it, competition is stiff in the cartooning world these days, but if this sounds like something you want to do, I think you could find modest success with it.

I don't know thing one about newspaper publishing but I have some slight expertise with webcomic publishing.

My first goal was to see if I'd have the interest to do it for a year. I did lag some over winter, but picked back up again in spring. My new goal is to have a year's worth of strips. I've got a little over 100 to go. If I do go offsite I'd like to create all new artwork. I have been creating backgrounds recently and stockpiling them. Next is character design. I sincerely appreciate the encouragement. Any advice is welcomed.

I like these two recent strips, if I do say so myself.

Thoughts? Anyone?

How about a comic about Vagina Dad & Penis Mom?  Call it "The Kardashian Capers"!

This series is for a recent comic competition.  The topic is current events.  I chose to address the situation regarding the recent backlash to “hunter/dentist” Walter Palmer who lured and killed a lion from a wildlife sanctuary in Zimbabwe.
