This is the last palindromic year we'll see in this lifetime, unless they legalize the manufacture of clones for the purpose of harvesting organs, but that's another topic involving a movie by the name of "Clonus" starring Peter Graves.

Yes, 1991 brought us Desert Storm just as 2002 brings us the continuation of Infinite Justice, both of which occurred during an economic recession under a President named George Bush. Is there some sort of Lincoln/Kennedy connection going on here? ... But I digress.

The theme for this contest is the palindrome. I'll try not to make the rules too complicated.

1) The entry, consisting of one or more comic strips, must contain at least one palindrome.

2) The palindrome can be either verbal or visual.

Here is an example of a verbal palindrome which is darned funny, even though it didn't make sense (which was the point of the joke):(Gnionarajanama)

3) The visual palindrome strips, as you may have guessed, must look the same forwards and backwards, with both backgrounds and characters. And no, the backgrounds you use do not have to be mirror images of themselves.

4) Extra points for including both verbal and visual palindromes.

5) Rule benders are allowed, based on their contribution to the humor of the entry.

6) Entries must be posted by Friday, 12:21 AM, GMT.

Simple enough? All right, then, get to it!

If there are any questions, I'll do my best to answer them as quickly as possible.

Here's an old one of mine. It isn't funny, but I think it deserves credit for being the first totally palindromic strip (apart from blank ones or ones with the just two asian girls).

That's weird Crabby, I had the same idea, it's simple and effective, but then, the Captain Palindrome/KKP story just jumped into my head and I couldn't get rid of it.

O, stone, be not so. It has happened again. While I'm working on another strip, someone else posts a strip with one of the same characters and one of my palindrome ideas. Anyway, I didn't see God: "A Dog" until I finished Dog God.

Anyone got any information about the postgraduate student who wrote a perfectly coherent, several hundred page thesis on the technicalities and history of palindromes, the paper itself being a palindrome from beginning to end? I've seen this story referred to in several sources, but I'm pretty convinced it's apocryphal. I'd be very impressed if anyone knew otherwise.

Riffing on a palindromic musical act was just too tempting. Just be thankful I didn't do it to a-ha.

Okay, taking the rules as literally as possible, they don't say that an entry must be about palindromes. The only real requirement is that each entry must have at least one palindrome. With that in mind, I chronicled the life and times of my favorite soap opera character, whose name just happens to be a palindrome. Every strip is legal, because it contains her name or another palindrome. Although it isn't really an intentional parody, as it does remain faithful to the actual plot, I found that soap operas get rather silly when you condense years of time into a few strips. In total, these strips span about 24 years.

Sorry I took so long to decide, but there's a lot of good stuff here, so it wasn't easy!

I'll start with the honorable mentions:

Kajun Firefly: "Captain Palindrome" - great sidekick idea
lemur68: "Hell? Eh" and " 'S Satan at ass"
fpd: "Robot mum Tobor", "Dog God", "Soap Opera Recaps" - in the words of Bill Murray in "Tootsie", "that is one nutty hospital!"
fuzzyman: "Call me Sidney"
andydougan: "He won a Toyota now, eh?"

And now, the moment for which you've all been waiting ever-so-patiently...

The winner is ...

**kaufman**

for his combination of "Writer's block" for the nice palindrome pun, and "ABBA brainstorming session" for the clever rule bender and Swedish flag background!

Congratulations, kaufman!

And thanks, everyone, for your efforts!

Well, I saw "Dr. Awkward" and "Do geese see God" and then my brain exploded.

Those weren't the hidden palindromes. They weren't even in the strips. I placed various non-palindromic references to known palindromes to obscure the real palindromes. For example, I said "Doctor Awkward," which is not a palindrome, instead of Dr. Awkward. I also mentioned Geese beholding God, but never asked "Do Geese see God?" Anyway, here are the actual hidden palindromes.

In the first strip, the hidden palindrome is the word "a", which is used as the indefinite article before words beginning with a consonant sound. It appears in the first panel just before the word "palindrome."

In the second strip, the hidden palindrome is the word "I", which is used as the subjective, first-person pronoun. It is said by the elf who is talking to Doctor Awkward in the last panel.

The third panel of each strip contained clues. Knowing what the answers are, you should be able to recognize the clues.
