This reminds me of a supposedly true story from many decades ago in Australian politics. Our major rural party is currently called the National Party, and supposedly represents our farmers (yeah, right). However, years ago they were the Country Party. The story goes that there was once a public meeting of some kind, and someone came to the microphone and said, "I'm a country member." Before he could go on, someone in the crowd shouted, "Yeah, we remember!" Thus, the name was hastily changed.
