Obviously the system stores the rankings numerically, but I can't seem to find the data. How do we find the exact score of a comic?

If you look at an individual comic you'll see that comic's number at the end of the URL in the address bar. Recent comics are in the high 7000s right about now.

So let's say you want to know the score of comic 7284. Start by multiplying it by 10. (Unless the number is prime, in which case multiply by 8.)

Take the result and subtract 1000. Reverse the digits of the result (ie 71840 --> 04817). Take the square root of that number and round down to the nearest multiple of 10.

Finally, find the result on the following table and note the number in the second column.

<0: 4.3
0-1500: 5.7
1501-8000: 2.3
8001-15000: 9.1
15001-20000: 12.2
20000-50000: 6.9
>50000: 18.4

Take the number you noted from the second column and multiply it by your age. Take the mod-26 of each 2 digit set (divide by 26 and note the remainder.) Take the result of each and note its corresponding letter (1:A, 2:B, etc.)

This should spell the name of the town in which you were born.

Sorry. I got confused. You actually _can't_ find out the numerical rankings of individual comics.

Don't feel bad. I asked the same question as soon as I got here. I think everyone else did too.

We used to give away the numerical scores. Then people started cheating. Now we cloak everything in black magic and secrecy. Seems to be working out.

Black magic? Dear lord, I had no idea! I'm never spending any time in this heathen-laden dump ever again.

I say good day, sir!

I'm generating 30,000 of those hits, so all I can say is, y'all're slackers.

(Hits to lowpass.net, that is. Not Gabe's mom. *shudders*)

And the winner for best putdown of 1989 is...

Seriously though, I'm glad so many hits are being generated. I was a little worried when the advertising banners went down and a couple of rumors started. Now it will be Lowpass Forever! Or some such battlecry.

Hey, I'm not the one reliving my Cheers days through a comic contest. You are Mr. 1980. You've probably got parachute pants, don't you?

Admit it! You're wearing them right now!

Cheers hadn't even started running in 1980. Also, I do not own nor have ever owned a pair of parachute pants. Now that I have completely thwarted your attempt to show that I live in the past, I must get going. It's hammer time.

Hey evil_d...

I was reading the Lowpass Forum last night and my wife was peering over my shoulder and she saw your name. Then she started to make fun of you. She said your name was silly, and that you wanted to be a rapper.

That's when I knocked her bitch ass onto the floor and told her to get me another beer if she knew what was good for her.

Gabe

PS - This is all true. Except for the bitch slapping part. I actually tried to hit her but she got me in a headlock and gave me a noogie until I screamed uncle. But it's the thought that counts.

Sigh. I knew the time would come when I'd have to defend myself against such accusations.

The truth is, evil_d is a shortened form of the nick I usually use. It does kind of make me sound like, say, Chuck D. And, well, I'm cool with that. But I wasn't trying for it.

My real nick is "evil_deceiver". It's a reference to Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy. I'm actually trying to sound not like a rapper, but like a pretentious philosophy student. However, since no one ever gets the Descartes reference, I usually end up sounding like a wannabe hax0r. I can't win for losing, it seems.

But wait, you say. Why didn't I just use "evil_deceiver" as my nick for the Strip Creator? And that's a fine question. In fact, I tried to, but I got told that it was already in use. Sure enough, it was. Now, the interesting question is, who is this mysterious person who's using my nick and hasn't created any comics? The way I see it, there are three possibilities. The first is that someone else out there also uses the same nick, but doesn't think much of the Strip Creator. The second is that I registered it myself, but mistyped my e-mail address and never got the password. The third is that a member of a mysterious shadow organization is going around registering my handles in various places so I can't use them. In fact, this third possibility seems to me to be the most likely.

So, in conclusion, if your wife feels the need to mock me, tell her that there are plenty of valid reasons for her to do so, and she doesn't need to make up any new ones. In any case, I do appreciate your willingness to inflict physical harm on your significant other on my behalf. Like you said, it's the thought that counts.

Plus she hit me again.

As you can see: Gabe's marriage is on solid ground. How, you may ask, did he come to be so deftly capable of steering the stormy seas of matrimony? Easy! He took the Cosmopolitan Magazine Relationship Test. In no time, you, too can learn to handle any domestic crisis in a way that tells your spouse: "Hey, I care!" Here is question #1:

I mean, you highjacked my whole motherfucking strip idea, charaters, premise and all... but the "going home to mother" thing? That's old hat, bro. :- )

Ah... I love computing from work. We just got new PCs today and I was downloading the trial version of Flash 5. 18.5Mb in about 30 seconds. And I thought the DSL line at my house was zippy.

How great would it be to have assloads of money so you could hook up a line like that to your house? I wonder what Jerry Yang and Bill Gates have for surfing the web.

If I had silly money I'd spend it on pointless things. Like hooking up an 2.5Gbit/s OC48 to an SGI supercomputer in my bathroom so I could surf the web really really fast while I was taking a dump.

That'd be cool.
