I decided to move this conversation out of the T-Shirt room, to let that room have more room to discuss the actual design of the shirt. (Sorry, guys, but I never buy any clothing with any sort of logo or writing on it.)

I think what we've said about intellectual property every other time the topic has come up is basically that if we want to reprint a comic, we have to get the permission of everyone who contributed art or text.

Again, you could get around that by changing each character for a Stripcreator Original in the published or syndicated version. Just a thought.

quote:
I would prefer that SC merchandise feature full comics...

SC merchandise, by the way, would have the same problem as published comics if it were to feature characters that are not in the public domain or stripcreator originals.

quote:
The idea of syndication raises the question of what periodical would dare risk offending a large portion of its readership by printing the sort of comics most of us write.

Well, there are a number of "clean" comics in most people's repetiore. And again, we could go after the non-mainstream market, publishing in the same places Max Cannon (Red Meat) and other off-beat comics do. Or we could go straight to books (RAAAAARR: The Tobor Chronicles).

I saw a cartoon book for sale called 101 Uses for a Dead Cat. If that shit can make it to publication we should have no trouble.

quote:
Of course, there's nothing to stop a group of creative people from banding together, creating their own comic strip, and trying to sell it to an appropriate publisher. But I don't see any way that syndicating Stripcreator content could work.

But you see, Stripcreator would simply serve as the vehicle for banding those creative people together.

Any thoughts from anyone on this idea, or any other ways to make Stripcreator.com some moolah?

I'm seriously on my way to opening up my floral and gift shop. I'd be happy to see those nice young men in their clean white coats...
Err, I mean, I'd be happy to sell hats & tee shirts, maybe even buttons (as long as they're all reasonably priced) without commission.
I should be open by September 1, 2002 if all goes as planned ('course, it never does).

I wouldn't be happy with anything that cuts Brad out of the loop.

I like what you have to say, Scyess, and especially the passion behind it, but for me it simply comes down to I'm for what Brad's for.

That sounds like fun. Did you talk about your plans in another thread? If so, which one? If not, fill us in.

My dad owned an ice cream shop, a bike shop, 4 lock shops, and a lamp shop during his life. I'd love to my own shop too one day, though I'm not sure of what yet. Maybe electronic or computer repair.

Christ -- is EVERYONE in these forums an unemployed computer person? (Actually, no one answer that; I don't want to know.)

Whoever suggested college newspapers in the tee-shirt forum, that's not a bad idea. Of course, college papers may have the kind of funding to provide a decent return, and I think most papers prefer to have student strippers. Still, college papers are one of the many ideas we could try if we did something like attempting syndication.

Mmm... yummy!

Obi has a point, though -- if this is all to wild & crazy for Brad, I guess we can stop talking about it now! He is the man in charge. What do you think, Brad?

Right. But if we're going to print a given comic (say Cowboy Physics) we can go about getting permission from the appropriate people (in this case, just max, since we're assuming the clip art is free, although we should probably double-check the original license) fairly easily. More easily, at any rate, than getting permission from everyone who's donated art in order to implement the "your comic on a t-shirt" idea, or than getting permission from every artist and a bunch of authors in order to implement the "book of existing comics" idea.

Some of us are employed!

On the subject of syndication: It sounds like at this point what we're talking about is a subset of Stripcreator authors, probably including Brad, getting together, producing some humorous material using characters other than those available at Stripcreator.com, selling it somehow, maybe to "alternative" newspapers or maybe in a book, and using the proceeds to help keep the site running. Right?

I actually happen to have a few bucks on me, some of which I'm mailing to Brad in a couple of weeks, (address?); and a bit of experience with specialty merchandising. Plus, I could sell them at the Round House Bar at Duffy's Window in the Round. How does 600,000 POP traffic in 7 months grab ya?

Lemme know.

That sounds like fun. Did you talk about your plans in another thread? If so, which one? If not, fill us in.

I discovered a few months ago that one of the local banks has a free, no mimimum balance business account available. So I opened one up and was to get 50 business checks free. When my statement came, they all but ate my balance with a $157.00 charge for the 300 printed checks they sent me. I went into the bank almost in tears, sporting an Uzi, and they said "It's O.K., our fault, we'll eat this fee." God luv 'em. And, of course I got to keep the 300 checks!

So as far as having business checks and a nifty little stamper the bank gave me as a gift, I'm all set. I'm looking into business cards currently, just got an email from VistaPrint about 250 free business cards I need to look into further.

The room I'll be running the business out of is crammed with supplies, shelving and dressers that I plan on covering with lace for display, drawers used as storage. I also have a huge armoire that I got at a garage sale for $5.00 last year, which has two big drawers and cabinet on top. I have black velvet I'm going to line the top part with, stick some lighting in it and display some wedding bouquets in it.

Now all I need is time. Ha Ha. : )

I like bunner's idea as well! Between the two of us, we should be able to generate some income for Brad.

Something like that; the idea can be tinkered with and altered, improved, etc. But, like I said, if Brad isn't in for it, it won't happen. (At least not through stripcreator.com; there's nothing from keeping people less lazy than I to do it on their own.) We're also entertaining any other ideas to generate money for the site.

And ObiJo, by the way, there's nothing about stripcreator.com serving as a vehicle for banding together comic geniuses like myself that in itself implies that we "cut Brad (or stripcreator.com) out of the loop." My idea was rather that Brad would spearhead and control the project THROUGH stripcreator.com. Once again, though, I'm committing people to do stuff without their knowledge or concent. 8)

(Gotta stop that; last time I did that California ended up with a big electric bill for all those power deals I signed them up for -- but I've said too much...)

Long and short of it is -- it's all up to Brad how he wants to raise money for the site. I'm just offering some suggestions.

Hell, with the crap that gets spewed out and called "comics" in the MIt news[paper, it shouldn't be a problem. I'm sure a similar phoenomenoin occurs in other places.

Ah, I see. I wouldn't mind contributing to that.

What I thought you were saying is that individual comic strippers could get together and try to put out a book of new comics by themself. "Cutting Brad out of the Loop" wasn't intended as a slight, but just as the most succinct way of describing it. I don't think this is an evil idea, I just wouldn't be happy doing it since my main motivation is raising money for stripcreator.

I thought of another way to make Brad some money.

Right now, the only incentive to send Brad money (besides it being the right thing to do) is a title under your name. What if we used the PBS telethon model and had gifts?

For those who don't know, in the US, we have a TV channel called the Public Broadcasting System that is non profit and has to beg for cash from viewers a few times a year, since they get little from government and grants. Anyway, when they do this, they offer gifts/incentives to donate (which were donated to them I guess) like books, videos, etc. ie: "Donate $25 and get this Doctor Who coffee mug".

So, we could pool our talents, and offer incentives to pressure/nudge each other (and newbies) to donate. These wouldn't have to be physical objects. They could be things like help with photoshop, MP3s, whatever.

examples (none of these prizes or amounts have been cleared with the people I'm naming, I'm just brainstorming):

for $25, Dexx will move you to the front of the "I'm drawing your character" queue, so you get yours earlier than those who don't pay.

for $20, Lady J will pen a paragraph of insults for the (non-SC) victim of your choice.

for $20, Kaufman will make a strip including a pun about your dog's name and a classic American novel of your choice.

for $15, Bunner will tell you stories of his childhood before automobiles, electricity, and telephones.

for $5, lara7 will send you a nude photo.

for $10, lara7 will send you a nude photo of someone other than Bazilla.

anyway, you get the idea. what do ya'll think?
