Good one Drexel.

On a tangent, people who complain about being bored really irritate me. I am never bored, except when reading comics in which people complain about being bored. There is too much stuff to do and to little time to do it. How can bordem exist in such a situation?

(Have I just proven the opposite by writing something boring?)

still not funny. in fact, most things that are funny consist of a set-up and a punchline. the tradition dates back to ancient greece, you know--billions of earthlings can't all be wrong.

as a matter of fact, let's see what merriam-webster has to say on the subject:

quote:
com·ic
Pronunciation: 'kä-mik
Function: adjective
Etymology: Latin comicus, from Greek kOmikos, from kOmos revel
Date: 1576
1 : of, relating to, or marked by comedy
2 : causing laughter or amusement : FUNNY
3 : of or relating to comic strips
synonym see LAUGHABLE
now, if my perception isn't amiss somehow, the only way that any of these so-called nihilistic comics pertains to this definition is the "synonym, see LAUGHABLE" part--but i don't think that's the connotation of LAUGHABLE that mssrs. merriam and webster want us to see in this case.

if only when you clicked on "make a comic" there could be an error message that says "this isn't a comic, fuckbucket."

now, i don't mean to imply that you folks aren't wonderful people, nor necessarily unintelligent, it's just that if you want to make a point about your own personal weltanschauungen, or whatever, a very good way to make sure it doesn't fall on deaf ears--or deaf eyes, as it were--is to bring the ha-has. there's a reason why i started skipping "for better or worse" so many years ago: comic strips that aren't "comics" are more often than not festering, steaming piles of goat shit.

Il Schmucko. You don't have to have a lead up and a punchline for something to be funny. I look at some people on the streets sometimes and just start laughing. Millions of people can't be wrong huh? Have you looked at Catholicism? Yeah, that's what I thought. Oh, and the world is round, or at least, we are damn sure it isn't flat anymore. If you think that comic need to be set in a certain tried and true method, at least back it up with some mustard.

first off, mr. sparticus sir, i said most things. among those things are comic strips--and particularly StripCreator strips. three panels worth of clip-art, i hope you would agree, lend themselves particularly well to that kind of comedy.

is it possible to use this medium for some other kind of comedy? most likely. hell, somebody will laugh at most anything. but to come into a forum called "read my damned comics" is implicitly to seek approval from the StripCreating masses, and to attempt to do so without that "tried and true" construct that is the punchline is foolhardy at best.

sparticus983

I really hope there is a second, because A. I wasn't coming here for approval, and B. There is no B. If you think that I want you to tell me my comics are genius and funny I would ask you what kind of shite you liked so that I could make something for you. But seeing as how I am in the habit of making things for myself, as I see them, and not trying to please a crowd that for the most part I see as inferior to myself, I don't feel obligated to follow any pre ordained contruct. No matter how well this site may be set up for it. And even that is just your opinion.

il_schmucko
September 8, 2002 10:19 PM

hey. of course the bottom line is that what is "funny" is incredibly subjective. some people could see an old lady get hit by a car and have it make their day. i recently worked with an autistic guy who thought it was funnier than hell to ask people what time it was.

quote:
I am in the habit of making things for myself, as I see them, and not trying to please a crowd that for the most part I see as inferior to myself
keep telling yourself that if it helps you sleep better, but by posting here you're inviting people to read your works and pass judgment on them. now, if people tell you you're tremendously unfunny and ought to consider hara-kiri and you shrug it off and say "everyone can go to hell," more power to you. but you did ask, and i know you won't tell me it isn't my prerogative to tell you i think you suck if it's true. after all, i'm in the habit of making comments for myself, as i see them.

...and the flat earth analogy was incredibly flimsy. i hope you know that.

The bottom line is correct. Everyone has their own humor, and I can't tell someone that there sense of humor is wrong. But if you are taking what I said as if I am getting all bothered by this, you've taken it the wrong way. I really don't give a damn if people like it or not. Does it please me when someone sees things that same way as I do? Of course. And if you want to critize what I've posted you better fucking do it. But I enjoy arguing with people. And here is a good outlet for doing so. Telling myself most people are inferior to me doesn't make me feel any way about myself as all. It is just me being me, pretentious and modest as hell. I'm glad you can make comments for yourself. And that wasn't a smart ass remark. And the flat earth analogy may be a bit overdone, but that doesn't make it any less true.

it has entirely to do with the number of comics you make... in fact brad, who runs the site, is still a "stripcreator newbie," as he makes no comics himself. as for personalizing the title that appears under your name, that requires donation to the cause.

It goes by how many posts you make to the fora, not by numbers of comics. Brad's title is "stripcreator newbie" just to be humorous, like.
