There was some way to comment on each comic. It would be kinda nice to tell people what we think of each one, but I suppose thats what this is for. *Shrugs*

Of course it would. You'd have to be pretty stupid to use cheese lessers.

I've been thinking about putting in a private messaging system so that people could give feedback to users that don't visit the forums.

Wait a minute, why would you use cheese graters at all in a war? Are you attacking the ground?

That could foster a lot of mudslinging though, among other things.

But it could be good, for example all users who haven't posted but have a certain number of comics (eg. 50) would get an automated message inviting them to the forums.

This seems like the most viable option for non-forum-based feedback that I've heard yet.

Another possibility, and one which might be easier on the SC database, would be to allow people to use the site to send e-mail to a user's registered address, without actually giving out that address if the user doesn't want it revealed. It would probably be best to give users the option to disallow this for their accounts, though, so the feature can't be used to spam anyone.

On the other hand, it's hard to imagine how much these features would add that can't already be expressed by simply adding someone to your favorites list, or contacting them via whatever contact info they've chosen to reveal.

One other idea which I mentioned a while ago in the IRC channel is allowing users to attach a simple "I liked this" flag to specific comics. Whether the name of the user who attached the flag should be revealed, or whether users should be able to see such flags that are attached to others' comics, I don't know.

I'm still reluctant to suggest bringing back the old voting system, although it is possible that the lists now presented on the new front page would encourage more people to vote more frequently.

And I'm definitely opposed to publicly viewable comments attached to individual comics.

Great idea Evil_D.

Here is my version of your idea:

Have a medal system, Registered users give GOLD medals, nonregistered users give SILVER medals. You give a medal to your FAVORITE comic. Each user has 3 medals. Once you give a medal to a comic, you can revoke it, but basically, there would always be 3 "favorite comics ever" that each user would be able to have. Then brad could make a top 10 gold and top 10 silver medal comic list, or a less desirably abused idea: Random comics with at least x gold medals, or random comics with at least x silver medals.

Also, it'd be cool if there was a "top friends" list, or method of search for people who have x or more people linking to them.

That makes it easy for unsuspecting people to get flooded with flames, etc. (and of course, if you ARE suspicious, you wouldn't even turn on the option in the first place).

I like this idea, but why would non-registered people give lesser medals (people not in the know WILL treat them as such)? I would suggest giving non-registereds less medals to play with; however, I don't like the idea of having a limited amount of medals at all because I'd have to take them from other comics.

Any way to make it so that you could put individual comics on your Favorites list (I mean, besides doing it manually on your profile :-P ).

I thought about this, but I'm assuming it would be abused and I'd get complained at and I'd have to make it default to off and then most people wouldn't bother to turn it on.

My vision of the private messaging would just make a little bit of text or an icon appear on the user's home page saying that he or she has new private messages. Click it, new window opens, messages are displayed. Options to reply to them, clear messages, etc. Easy to ignore, but eye-catching enough that people would probably check it out.

Also, messages would be very, very small and could expire after a month of sitting there or something, which would make it easier on the server than keeping them forever in a public comment system. It also wouldn't clutter the page much.

I don't know about voting and ratings and stuff. Some people seem to be really hot for it, but I don't quite feel it.

My favorite idea I've heard is a 1-10 rating that can be given only by registered users. I think this was Big Evil Dan's suggestion. It solves the problem of people creating multiple accounts to vote (unless they want to donate with all of them, which I can't say I'd mind).

Some people have pointed out that only a tiny minority of comics would get voted on under this system and it would ultimately be pretty pointless.

That never stopped me from getting out of bed in the morning.

As long as we're discussing ways to gratify our narcissism, how about a counter to tell us how many people have viewed a comic? Sometimes when I look at the front page I get curious.

I seldom look at my stripcreator "homepage." It would be better if you could put it in the blue bar at the top of every page. Perhaps under the word "stripcreator."
