We were taken by surprise by the Nazis. Stalin told us we would not be attacked.....he was sadly mistaken

They were relentless! They were ready. They started with the smaller towns, forcing their way through.

They were too much at one point. Cutting off our supply lines and backing us into a corner. We lost many men to the war and famine.

Our western rivals The U.S. It turns out that Russia and America had a common enemy.
Their added push ensured that Nazis goons would not have Russia.
Stalin was seen as a hero after the War but...

Over time the soldiers, peasants, and the American forces have been recognized as the heroes.

It was absolutely brutal. Supplies were often scarce and those in command did not do a very good Job.
What was it like fighting in the Red Army?
Morale became so low that many men, including officers began, began to retreat without permission. Some just fled the army altogether.
Stalin wrote order number 227, which attempted to invoke courage in the people. It set up measures to prevent "fear-mongers" from retreating without permission.
Well how did you guys still win the war?

He created squads of guards to stand behind soldiers on the front lines and commanded them to shoot or capture anyone trying to retreat without permission.
What do you mean "measures"?
He also created squads of Penal Battalions that consisted of soldiers who tried to retreat. Those squads were usually sent to the front lines.
That doesn't seem like it would make soldiers actaully want to fight.
Don't interrupt...He also used a lot of propaganda, mostly posters, that showed the Nazi's retreating like cowards. He also fed on our Russian Pride and claimed that we need to defend our Motherland!
Maybe why he was seen as a hero after the war? But who knows for certain...

He used propaganda like this to inspire to people to fight on for their country against the Nazi invaders.

Ok fine. I'll tell you about the Russian's fight against the Nazi invaders in WWII, and the struggles we face. Then will you leave me alone?

I remember the time I served in one of the Penal battalions for some time because I, along with many of my comrades, retreated without permission.
Wow! That must've been scary! What was it like?
It was terrifying...Everyday they sent us right near the frontlines and many of the men, including some of my friends, did not last long and were killed.
I also remember seeing some of my comrades try to sneak away or flee from the battle, but they were stopped by the NKVD guards at our backs.
That's Awful!

I remember seeing the propaganda posters all over the military bases. When I saw the Nazi's retreating on the poster and the "Mother" of Russia. I truly did want to fight.
Also, when I got back to Moscow, I remember hearing all day, everyday that Stalin was the true hero and that He was given the credit of defeating the Nazi's.
Did that make you mad?
We were upset about it, but there was really nothing we could do or say from fear of being executed or sent to the Gulag.
