I read this recently and must agree. I'm sure the story resonates more with those who have a child/children. It seems McCarthy is getting praise more because of his reputation and age than his actual works, but don't get me wrong, he deserves every bit of that praise. His early works are dense, often dark and disturbing examinations of human vice. I'm ashamed to admit I haven't read any of his later works except for The Road.
BTW, in The Road on pp 24-27 the city they enter is Knoxville, TN. The description of the house the man and boy stop and examine is based on McCarthy's childhood home in Knoxville -- in the book, the man even says, "It's the house where I grew up." Unfortunately, the actual house was recently destoyed by fire.
