I was making a dumb joke. Madden is/was the name of an obnoxious American sportscaster.

Now that I've explained the joke, it's funny, right? Guys? Uh, guys? (weeps openly)

well, in the first Leg at Portugal, Porto completly blasted Man U out of the water, so in the overall the best team did get through.

Except for the fact that Porto are idiots and wouldn't even be the "best team" against me and 10 bricks that I found in a demolished orphanage.

I'm happy that Man U went out though.

Do you not have ulterior motives for hating Porto, though? Let's face it, to get as far as they have done, they can't be a bad team, and it can't all be down to their rampant cheating.

I've always thought they were awful to watch, infuriating and boring at the same time, but yes, it's probably a case of sour grapes.

Not that I'm a Celtic fan.

24 March 2004--Soccer Alert!

Chelsea vs. Arsenal today 2:30-4:45pm (EST) on ESPN2.

[hr]

Also, what's up with stoppage time, and is there a limit on how much time can be added to the end of the match?

Theoretically there's no limit on stoppage time but it's typically between one and three minutes. I've seen games where as much as 8 have been added on, but usually those are when particularly nasty injuries occur.

I have a funny feeling Chelsea might break with form and get a draw tonight. But I think Arsenal are looking good for a showdown with Real, and then into the final with AC Milan, by the looks of it.

PS -
Did anyone see the AC Milan vs Deportivo La Coruna game last night? It was amazing Within the space of 6 minutes in the second half, AC came back from 1-1 to completely PWN Deportivo with three goals, all of them awe inspiring.

Arsenal 3-2 tonight, 2-0 in the second leg.

I didn't score quite as much.

I was gonna mention that if Manchester United are in the lead, it's usually about 30 seconds; if they're trailing, a good 5 minutes. I take it Rangers are the same

I can never score at home. I seem to be better at away legs recently.

The AC Milan-Depeortivo game was frickin' wicked. Best game of football I've seen all season in any league - a real advert for European Champions League football.

Finally, 1-1 tonight. I'd agree with 2-0 in the return leg. I ought to have put money on...

Did anyone see any of these games? I'd be interested in a neutral perspective.

Better than Man City's Hollywood-style, 4-3, 10-man come back?

Thanks. Most of the stoppage time I've seen has been around 3 minutes, so I was curious.

Chelsea-Arsenal was pretty good, but ended up 1-1. I assume they play again since Arsenal was "away," I believe?

My favorite moment was when one of the announcers exclaimed, "Chelsea are knocking on the door like rabid* debt collectors." *He might have said "avid" or something else, but I cracked up. This aside leads to another question...

Do you guys find your football announcers necessary/enjoyable?

I like them because the player positions are "loose," but I realize being new to the game makes a difference. However, I also enjoy the announcers for the rare Rugby and Australian Rules Football games I get to watch.

Personally, I could do without the announcers for American football. One exception is ESPN's Sunday Night Football crew of Mike Patrick, Joe Theismann and Paul Maguire. They're entertaining and don't bore me to death with details.

It really depends which channel have the rights to the match, John Barnes and co on Channel 5 (or is it just 5ive now?) are absolutely awful, it's like watching a 3 year old try to present the general elections whilst choking on a small toy.

BBC Scotland are entertaining, especially this season, watching Chick "Simply The Best" Young interview a dejected Alex McLeish week after week, however I'll occasionally flip the Sky channel over to watch Match of the Day present the same match as they tend not to start talking about what their taxi driver thinks Partick Thistle are doing wrong this year.

Sky Sports are pretty neutral and professional, it's just that absolute cock-face Andy Fucking Gray that ruins the entire broadcast, screaming like an over-enthusiastic German porn star.

But enough about the commentators, did anyone see that joyful UEFA Cup match tonight? David Marshall, a legend in the making.

True, Barnsey's too nice and Channel 5 too inexperienced to make a true presenter out of him, but I thought he was OK.

You're only saying that coz he was a Hun. :D

As for commentators:

John Motson (BBC 1) - Institution. Makes stats sound fun, but could make a 5-5 draw sound like a maths lecture.
Alan Green (BBC Radio 5 Live) Opinionated twat who has no business commentating AND presenting the rant show afterwards. Doesn't help that he's Anglicised his Norn Irish accent, IMHO.
Jonathan Pearce (5ive, BBC Radio 5 Live) Distinctive voice, that's it.

Everyone else - Brilliant. The best commentators are the ones you never notice. Martin Tyler on Sky, whoisface on Radio 5, etc. Commentary should be as colourless as possible, but informative.

Bloody good result for you. Not surprised Liverpool lost.

In 1 hour and 30 minutes , the best (supposedly) game of the year in English football will kick off, that being Arsenal v Chelsea , 2nd leg of the European Champions League Quarter Finals.

I would heartily recommend that anyone in the US , Canada , or the Southern Hemisphere with a TV Capable of receiving this match, tune into it and watch whats going to be an absoloutely excellent match.

I would Also like to point out there are 2 types of "Football"

Theres "American" Football
And theres "Real" Football

Kajun , someday i shall show up, and drag you screaming by the tip of your cock up to Firhill to watch Thistle so that you can truly appreciate "The Beautiful Game".

We might even watch the Jags play as well.

I could just stand outside of the joke that is Firhill and look over the top of the crappy stadium to watch the match. The last two games I saw played there were the Scotland U21's getting pumped 2-0 by Romania (which should have been about 6-0) and the awful Rangers/Motherwell game at the weekend.

There was nothing "beautiful" about either game. I do enjoy watching Thistle play though.

Theres 4 teams left in a 2 leg knockout semi final. If Porto cheat like they did against, well , pretty much fucking everyone, they can beat Lyon and Milan and go to the final.

If they get there, and they face Chelsea, i think Chelsea will win it.

The three favourites go out, and somehow, Chelsea might win it, I'm scared, Daddy.

(also, it's called "five" nowadays, with a small 'f' so that it "doesn't appear threatening")
