*Laugh!* No doubt about that. But I prefer slower music, so *this* is the one I want to keep an eye on...

Doom Swing

Hey, and I found one for Alcyone...

Gothgrass

(Interestingly, I got Rap Rap right after getting Rock Rock.)

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club has to be the coolest big market radio band I've heard in a while. If you liked Love and Rockets in the "Motorcycle"/"So Alive" period, you'll probably like BRMC.

I don't know about music types, but at the moment I'm listening a lot to the Cooper Temple Clause album, some Wu-Tang, the new Chemical Brothers album, Prince's greatest hits and Mr Scruff, who does songs about fish.

I could have sworn I posted this on Saturday, but obviously not:

in no order at all:

01 - Geek Rock (Early Radiohead, Weezer, Muse)
02 - 80's Rock (GNR, Aerosmith)
03 - Hip Hop (Wu-Tang Clan, Gang Starr, Pharcyde)
04 - Gangster Rap (NWA, Dr Dre, Snoop Doggy Dogg (not Eminem, that little punk))
05 - Lo Fi (new Radiohead, Grandaddy, The Beta Band)
06 - Alternative Hip Hop (Del tha Funky Homosapian, Dan the Automator)
07 - New Rock (not Nu-Metal, Lost Prophets, System of a Down)
08 - Alternative Dance (Prodigy, Daft Punk)
09 - The Insane Clown Posse (a category of their own)
10 - Anything with a Violin (violin songs are instant classics in my mind, or Hammond Organs, that pretty much wins awards as far as I'm concerned)

I don't know what category these guys fall under, but I am a huge fan of Ben Folds, Tom McRae and Ed Harcourt and not quite as big a fan of Stephen Malkmus.

Although I can probably tell you what kinds of music I like, it's a bit harder to order my music preferences. Let me approach this by describing the qualities I like in music and which music it can be found in.

COMPLEXITY

I tend to like complex music with lots of things going on in it. Styles include Progressive Rock, Ambient, Fusion, and Baroque. I also often appreciate Classical music.

AMBIENT

I like music that creates its own sonic environment. Ambient music does this, of course. So does some Progressive Rock. New Age and Impressionism are also good at creating sonic atmospheres. My favorite radio programs are Echoes and Hearts of Space.

FEMALE VOCALS

I love beautiful female vocals. I have several CDs by female vocalists in many different styles of music, including Ancient Music (Hildegaard von Bingen), Ecto (October Project, Sarah McLachlan), Alternative (Tori Amos), Country (Faith Hill), Pop (Madonna), Dance (B-52's), Techno (Enigma, Bel Canto), Celtic (Enya, Clannad), Native American (Joanne Shenandoah), Jazz (Sade), Lipstick Lesbian (Fem 2 Fem), and Christian (Amy Grant). But I generally hate Opera.

RHYTHM

I frequently like music I can dance and exercise to. I generally prefer to dance/exericise to complicated ambient music, such as Tangerine Dream. I also find that the sports music of John Tesh is good for this. Some groups I especially like dancing to include Bel Canto and the B-52's.

Overall, my favorite groups/artists include Bel Canto, October Project, Tangerine Dream, Yes, Asia, Rush, UK, Vangelis, Renaissance, and Faith Hill. My favorite composers include Hildegaard von Bingen, Antonio Vivaldi, Johann Sebastian Bach, Beethoven, Holst, John Williams, and Claude Debussy.

Hey, bunnerabb, if you're reading this, that little piece of the Billy Joel interview I told you about months ago is still awaiting your attention. I have not seen you on ICQ since I ripped it to MP3, so I haven't had a chance to send it to you. As such, I have uploaded it to my personal webspace - here - so you can download it in your own time.

In case you have forgotten, it is his commentary on how radio used to be a socially unifying force, but now the powers of marketing have pigeonholed everything, turning music into yet another thing that divides us.

Gimme a yell when you have it, so I can delete it and free some space. :)

The violin is one of the reasons why "Time of your life" by Green Day was such a great song.

Now break out the fiddles and the...uh. . .fiddlestick, or something.

And so...

1. Stuff with a beat that makes me want to dance
2. Stuff that makes me want to get laid
3. Stuff that makes me want to start a pub brawl
4. Stuff that stimulates my brain
