I was under the impression that the Mayans has no written language or numbers, and their tax collectors used an amazingly accurate accounting system that involved differently-coloured strings tied in knots. No, I'm not kidding. Apparently the Mayan tax-collectors were among the most feared in history, and they never made a mistake.
Uh... yeah, anyway - since they didn't have written numerals, they could not have had a numeral for zero. It is certainly possible that they understood the concept of zero as a number, though. I don't know.
Actually, I just dug around in Google, and this was apparently the Incas, not the Mayans.
