I draw and write my own series of comic books. I was wondering who else does.

I used too, but then the union stepped in and put a stop to it.

My friend Petra draws Kitty Banana. I don't remember the website. Do a google search. I wrote the theme song, though.

Chaobell draws usr/bin/w00t, allenhenderson draws A Triangle Morning and boinky33 draws Hoppy and George

for starters.

And even I once contributed a panel to the Bollox fusion comic.

I intend to write my own comic series someday, but I'd need an artist, money to selfpublish with, and to not be a lazy, useless slob who never puts effort into anything.

I would if I had a scanner. Its kind of a pain in the ass to do it by hand with a mouse (I really have no patience at all). I usually just draw individual characters or small graphics or I do some scenery (which you've actually seen some of the crappier stuff by way of the backgrounds I submitted. Happy place is a small chunk of one of my scenes).

Graphics tablets are cheaper than you think.

I got my graphics tablet through the refurbished product services offered by Wacom. It's cheaper and it works just as well as a new one, and you don't have to worry about getting a maybe broken one on eBay.

But actually I don't use it all that much. I do for my comics on my blog where I'm just drawing right into Photoshop, but since I started authoring my main comic in Illustrator I almost never use the tablet for that. I like and take advantage of the precise control you have in Illustrator. Also it facilitates the process of copying and modifying characters without loss of quality since it's all vector graphics. A cheaper and better time-saving solution to getting a scanner or tablet might be checking out Illustrator or a similar vector-based drawing program. It's especially good for those who just plain cannot draw well.

Illustrator aids in getting neater, more controlled stroke lines, and unless you rasterize something you can resize your original file to your heart's content.

Like here, unless I'm drawing on a gigantic canvas, I have a lot of trouble getting lines this smooth. Line smoothing tools in Photoshop, Flash, and other programs I just find too limiting in terms of control.

Illustrator is also a good tool for the lazy, because you can easily copy your backgrounds if you only make a few, and change their elements like color very easily. Likewise you could just build a bank of a few character poses and perspectives and re-use them with simple modifications.

If you really like seeing the hand-drawn stroke lines like this:

you're right, you can't beat a pressure-sensitive tablet. But don't discount drawing with a mouse, that's how I do almost everything in Illustrator.

Back in High School, I did three self-published (photocopied) comic books: The Qualitizers (an X-Men parody), The Radioactive Starfish (a Ninja Turtles parody that took on a very twisted life of its own), and The Bug-Eyed-Pepsi-Drinkin'-Breath-Stinkin'-Losers (Married With Children with even ruder humor and lots of decapitations). They were all pretty lame and I think I threw most of them out, but I found a few the other day and got a few good laughs out of them. Given all my hand and wrist problems (no masturbation jokes, please), I doubt I'll be drawing again anytime soon (which, trust me, is NO loss...).

I am in the process of finding a job and I live with my mother. I have virtually no money of my own, and what little I do have is being stored for future use (once I can get that job) toward a car, car insurance, and health insurance. So I can't indulge my side projects. I plan on getting a tablet the instant I get spare cash. Till then, I just work on little character art peices, improving, and I continue my search.

I agree with allenhenderson, Illustrator is the shit. Although I assume any other vector based drawing program would work just as well. Except Flash... Flash is a piece of crap when it comes to drawing.

I can't draw worth a damn. I can sketch alright, I can paint and I can sculpt, but I can't just draw a picture. If I were to do a wholly original strip it would have to be in the style of Red Meat (see my sig), and I can get that here (Hence the fact that all my strips have one panel repeated...).

Otherwise if I had a digital camera I would photograph people and add speech bubbles.

That's gonna be my next tablet for use at home.

I have the Graphire2 at work, and it works brilliantly! (everyone say it now, BRILLIANT!)

The Graphire2 is awesome, but it has no tilt control, which bugs me a bit.

I use the tablet on and off with the mouse at work. Usually I use the pen when I need precise control over something like erasing a background, or need more random strokes for backgrounds. I'm not a tremendously great artist when it comes to hand-drawn stuff, but I get the job done.

Actually, now that I think about it, I do do my own comics sometimes. I don't draw them, my friend Andrew does. But I write them. Perhaps I'll get one up here.

I've always wanted to draw someone else's story. I think it would be a cool change from drawing just my own stories. If anyone wants to work on something like that with me, contact me or leave a post here.

Last time I heard, Jasmine was giving 20 dollar head on 42nd street to save up cash for a new scanner.
