Here, I´ll try this one out, see what happens.

Not merely a contest, Art Theory Throwdown is a way for the sensitive, myopic art flakes that skulk in the dim-lit, smoky corners of Chez Stripcreator to express their ideas and notions about what art is, can be and what it must become. All of this under the facade of a "stupid message board competition".

So, to start things, I´d like to see any willing participants [bk]

Deconstruct A Genre Convention

Clarification: My definition of deconstruction in Literature or Film is the creative process of breaking down a classical form or concept, examining how and why the pieces work and then either putting it back together as it was before (now with the cogs all shiny again) or arranging them in such a way you have an new machine entirely. Two means to the same end: to expose how fiction works while at the same time giving the audience something fresh to chew on.

So, in my estimation, the following are adept deconstructions: Watchmen (Superhero Fiction),Memento(Mystery Thriller),Fight Club(Apostolic Tale),Bill & Ted´s Bogus Journey(Classic Greek Epics),One Flew Over The Cuckoo´s Nest(the Buddy Salvation subplot) and so on and so forth.

I´d say that there´s only one hard and fast rule: Don´t overreach. Due to the limitations of the Stripcreator form it may be difficult and laborious to deconstruct an entire Genre (for creator as well as reader). So just stick to a convention, a theme or specific scene, utilized by all or most of the stories in any particular Genre (i.e. the "masquerading in guards uniforms" scene you´ll find in many High Action/Escape films).

Okay, so let the skull-thumpin´ ball-bustin´ jaw-droppin´ art theorizing begin.

(This contest will be evaluated by consensus of all participants. Whichever comic everyone seems to like the most wins.)

I translated the rules into Japanese, then back into English, and got the following results:

quote:
This is a new type of competition so I don't need to win a contest to post. The Crossover Cup is simple...
You will find a partner(EXAMPLE:Boinky33 and Yoba) You will than cross your comics with theirs but the winner whens by funny and to make the contest different. Every winner must have the same rules eccept they can add any 3 rules they want. Here are mine

1:Can't crossover with your other username (EXAMPLE:Scyess & Not_Scyess)

2:Your partner may not choose another partner.

3:Your partner must also conticipate in so if you choose Boinky33 and he agrees he must do a crossover with you.

Enjoy! Will be judged by next friday June 6th!

Here's how I understand it: every movie genre has conventions that are unique to it, i.e. familiar cliches that arbitrarily pop up time and again and are accepted by the audience, and we're supposed to either spoof them as they are or take them apart and reassemble them in interesting ways. I chose the cliche of the woman always falling down repeatedly while running away from the monster and then standing there watching and doing nothing while the good guy fights the monster. This cliche is also seen in other genres -- you can just replace "monster" with "bad guy" or whatever. ArtemisStrong pointed out another one ("the 'masquerading in guards uniforms' scene you´ll find in many High Action/Escape films") A variation on this often appears in comedies in which guys have to dress up as girls for some reason.

I think that's a correct interpretation of the rules. If not, then I will have sex with my dog.

Biped nailed it.

Find a convention or cliche, figure out how it works or doesn't work, then proceed to either mock it mercilessly or recraft it into an original, unique premise. Think critically, write smart and subtle, and avoid base humor (unless you chose to examine something such as "The Villain Getting Hit In The Groin In A Children's Picture")

All may enter, participants are judges, the comic that receives the highest accolades is the winner. Judging takes place on July 9. On that day, just reply with the one comic that made your heart sing (So far biped has the strong advantage, being the only participant/judge and thus minimizing his choices to one).

Why didn't I just explain it like that in the first place?
