I'm honestly shocked at how many search items I plug into that site and come up with nothing. There must be millions of those pages, and yet 90% of them are just the same self-indulgant crap repeated over and over again.

Every once in a while something funny shows up, but god...

Well, most of my attempts get a 1-star rating right out of the gate. But there's no rhyme or reason to the ones that get 4 or 5 stars and heaps of extravagant praise, like this one. So I can't figure out what the ytmnd secret of success is.

It's kind of like Stripcreator in a way... Like how on average everyone on the site has between 1 and 2000 cowboy physics takeoffs.

That one you just posted for example, is one in a vast series of sites that are taking off from an idea of something traveling really fast set to that one crappy techno loop with the phrase "LOL _____". I think the reason people like that one so much is a combination of fast sinking + underwater muffling of the crappy techno loop. It's mildly amusing in context, I guess... but without the context, there's really nothing funny about it.

Really though, I really don't get what's so funny about the premise of that particular "joke" in the first place.

For that matter, I don't even get what's supposed to be funny about the original ytmnd page. How in the hell it sparked anything is completely beyond me.

Yeah, I checked out some of the earlier "LOL" ones before, trying to find exactly what was funny about the fad, but I couldn't detect any overall context that actually made them funny. Also, if the original "ytmnd" was done today it would probably get 1 star.

The only lol I really liked was http://loldialup.ytmnd.com/ , probably because I spent so many years on dialup while everyone else was on high speed.

But not only that, I'm guessing that someone actually went to the effort to remix that crappy loop and add the modem sound. On top of that, the loop actually sounds pretty nice at that speed. That plus the jpgs won me over... but had I never seen any of the other lols, I don't think I'd have found it nearly as funny.

I think that's a major problem with most of the junk on that site. It's so self-referrential, and being as abstract as it is, you're pretty much in the cold as to how to research any of it.

So, the "Peanut Butter Pussy" one made it onto the "Up and Coming YTMND" list where in the span of about 30 minutes it was viewed almost 600 times and accumulated about 30 votes.

After this experience, I think most people on that site have a mental disability that hinders their ability to see anything other than the 1 star or the 5 star button, because that's pretty much what each vote either added to or subtracted from the average.

I agree. The least interesting thing I did got the most stars. I think a static jpg of Sean Connery with a wav of Darth Vader going "noooooooooooo" would get five stars.
