This is a long-winded bitch that I've posted in FGH because I'm sure it'll turn into a fight

Living in NYC I've had the opportunity to observe a shit-load of people all the damn time. Over the years I've developed a theory that smokers litter more than non-smokers. A lot more. There is a trash can in sight of EVERY location in Manhattan and yet people are dropping trash at their feet constantly. This bugs the shit out of me. I was just on my porch and saw this fella talking with some friends while finishing some napkin wrapped food. When he was done he looked at the napkin, looked around briefly, balled it up and dropped it on the sidewalk. He then lit up a smoke and continued to chat with his friends.

I suspect that years of casually, if not unconsciously, flicking cigarette butts on the ground smokers have become numb to the act of littering.

After a couple minutes chatting and smoking, the guy also dropped his cigarette butt.

Smoking's bad blah, blah, blah. That first and second-hand smoke debate is beat to death. My parents smoked and it did me no harm. What I'm concerned about is if the habits associated with smoking produce a more lax attitude towards other social violations like littering.

What do you think?

I think your theory that smokers litter more is utterly fallacious.

I think your parents smoking habits while you were young turned you into a huge homo.

i'm a smoker, and i don't litter. that's a personal habit of mine made easy by the town i live in who place a trash receptacle on every block.
i hate walking on littered streets, it makes me feel like i'm walking through the ghetto or something.
beyond that, i haven't noticed smokers in particular littering more often unless they're kids, who seem to do what they want, when they want with no regard to anyone else's space or property.

i suggest punching the next dozen or so people you see litter, and tell them to do the same thin. this is called punching it forward, and it works.

But seriously...When I was a smoker, I always felt guilty and always threw my butts into an ashtray. Unless I was driving, then I just threw them out the window. There is alot of cigarette butt litter out there.

Have some sympathy for smokers. Walking an extra 20 feet to reach a garbage bin uses up valuable and dwindling lung capacity.

Stupid jackasses litter more than non-stupid non-jackasses, regardless of their breathing habits.

I personally drop my butts into an ashtray when there's one around. I rarely litter, and I sure as hell don't toss my butts out the window unless it's absolutely pouring outside. Why? Thousands of acres of land is at stake. You toss that butt out the window, you could be the asshole who starts the 10,000 acre wildfire. So if you MUST toss your butts, at least kill the cherry first.
Littering is annoying, unintentionally starting fires because of littering is idiotic.

DX, where you live, a wildfire is a major reality. Out here, not so much, but I see where you're coming from.

I hate that cars don't come equipped with ashtrays anymore, due to the majority of the population being nonsmokers who can't seem to figure out that an ashtray is a great place to store spare gas money and loose change from drive-thru's, leaving it up to the smoker to supply their own ashtray, and hoping it does the job. The car ashtrays available at this time are less than desireable. I do not own one, because I like being irresponsible.

I would almost have to agree that smokers are more prone to littering, using my husband as an example. However, I tend to go out of my way to clean up not only my own trash but other people's trash (people who leave their trays on the table at fast food joints really piss me off because I, like most of America's population, once worked at a McDonald's). So really, I think it's half and half and 100% dependent on the person in question.

Yeah, cause when there's only two cupholders and two people in the car, change can really screw up the balance of a can of soda. I do have an extra tray, but it's under the emergency brake so whenever I want to grab some mints, I have to stop the car.

I usually keep a roll of spare G's in a special compartment under the back seats, but sometimes it gets lost among the kilo bags of coke back there.

Thank you for not trying to pressure me into quitting smoking, by the way.

I also wanted to state that the car ashtrays that you can buy (that kind of look like cups wearing crowns) are really only designed to hold up to 3 cigarettes. If you go on a long trip, you'd have to stop every hour or so to dump the thing out or risk starting a small fire in your cupholder.
