Being the martyr that I am, I opted to stay faithfully at my PC instead of going out and boozing it up for St. Patrick's Day. And what do I have to show for it?
Only this.

I also learned that the forum can't deal with comics over 9999.

I decided that Scyess is right and I can't afford to let the 100K mile marker pass me by. So I've purchased enough Jolt and beef jerky to last me about eight years and had a toilet installed next to my PC, so there's no way it'll slip by me.

So now I've got nothing to do but sit back and wait for my moment of triumph.

Not quite. I've compiled a short list:

Sign divorce papers.
File for unemployment.
Drain gas out of tank and put car on blocks.
Obtain a live-in gastrointestinologist. (Beef jerky is rude.)
Install a fuck off huge security system to thwart creditors, process servers, and the legions of other Lowpass artists who will be trying to kill you after you run out of ideas with about 90,000 strips to go to hit 100,000.

Hope this helps you on your way,

Well, it's taken over a year to get thus far, so we can expect at least 10 years of consistent posting, which is sociologically improbable, as people will most likely eventually grow tired of th comic strip creator.
You'll be waiting a loooong time Gabe.

Not hardly. The first strip was posted on January 6th of this year, which means it's taken us roughly 10 weeks to get to number 10,000. Assuming that we continue at a constant rate of 1,000 strips per week, we should hit strip number 100,000 around early December of 2002. However, usage patterns from the past ten weeks suggest that for every old user who gets tired of posting, two new users will arrive to take his/her place. Surely this will plateau at some point, but assuming no disk crashes or prolonged suspension of service for any reason, I'd estimate that we'll hit strip 100,000 sometime in the second quarter of 2002.

Of course, I don't like to think about what sort of strips Gabe will be posting after subsisting for a year on naught but beef jerky and Jolt.

Could the subject of this thread be any more true? Intrigued by the idea of a statistical analysis of Lowpass Comic creation, I spent the last fifteen minutes gathering some data.

Right off the bat I realized that all my time spent huddled over my PC like some sort of PC-huddling fool was spent in vain. If you look at the comic list pages, you'll note they're displayed in sets of 100 (oddly enough my screen resolution and browser set up fits _exactly_ 25 listings from the top of the browser to the bottom, so it's easy to count).

Anyhoo, on the first page alone I noticed numbers 3-6 and 45 are missing for some odd reason. Thus are others smattered here and there. So my comic, though #10000, is actually the 9981st comic. The real 10,000th comic is this...

10019

And for either futher geekishness, the aforementioned stats:

Data range: 01/06/2001 - 03/18/2001
Daily comic totals-
Mean: 140.9
Median: 90
Mode: 74
High: 622 (02/27/2001)
Low: 46 (01/21/2001) *not counting the 3 of the first day

At the current daily average, we should reach #100K in 636 days, or mid-December of 2002.

The only reason having the ten thousandth comic would be cool is because the number ten thousand has all those zeroes when you express it in decimal notation. And since you, Gabe, have the comic which is indexed with all those zeroes, I think you can go ahead and claim whatever bragging rights that entitles you to. Anyway, I think that the missing comics you alluded to were, in fact, created, but were later deleted by Johnny for one reason or another. I've seen messages on here in which artists have requested that he delete certain strips, and I'm pretty sure he deleted that strip by "lowpassnumberone" or whatever the guy's name was who made an account just to brag that he knew how to cheat the voting system. So comic #10,000 is the ten thousandth comic after all -- we just can't still see every one of the first 9,999.

That's an interesting spike on February 27th. Anyone have any idea how it happened? Did anyone find this site around that time? I searched AltaVista for pages that link to the Strip Creator, but all I found were a bunch of weblogs. Maybe one of them was really popular.

I can't remember what went on then. The referral logs for the comic strip creator are a mess and I don't like them. I seem to recall there being a huge burst of traffic thanks to everyone on an Action Quake 2 message board making comics for a couple of days.

I was impressed with the bar graph. I wrote a very, very basic search engine for the comics so that a friend of mine could just read the ones with Jesus and the ones with the word "ass" in them. I keep meaning to finish it up and put it online but I've been busy and sleepy. Maybe one day.

The comic strip creator is also going to be getting its own domain. We're having a few technical problems with it though.

Just out of curiosity, I have a question to pose. I'm pretty sure that 800x600 is the most widely used monitor resolution. I assume it due to a mix of people having crappy vision, poor monitors and not knowing how to change it.

My own is set to 1152x864, and I can't stand anything bigger. It hurts my head. If I had a better monitor I'd probably crank it up even more.

So what does everyone here use? And any particular reason as to your choice?

1024 x 768

Bad eyesight won't let me go any larger, and any smaller and I feel like I'm working on an old mac. Association is a bitch.

Also, 1024 and 768 are both divisible by 3. Like the trinity. The voices told me that was an imperative.

evil_d
March 20, 2001 5:33 PM

I use 800x600. Unfortunately, Strip Creator comics are just large enough that they don't fit inside that. If I fiddle with the scroll bars I can usually get the whole comic inside the window, but by the time I finish I've already read the whole strip anyway.

I used to use 640x480, because it was the default and I didn't really have any problem with it. I changed because all the screens at work were 800x600, and I got to like it.

I probably should go up at least one more notch, but I'm reluctant to because I also assume that 800x600 is the most commonly-used resolution, and since I spend a lot of time writing web pages, I want to be able to see them the way most of my audience sees them. I see a lot of pages whose designers obviously don't ever consider the reality that different people use different resolutions, and it ticks me off. So I try to avoid that.

I use 1024x 768 res. It's legible, unobtrusive, I've never seen a page that didn't fit into it. And I hate all of those angry fruit salad HTML designs jumping out at me at 800x600 that are on the commercial pages I have to use for business.

Yeah, the web page design thing is a pain. What I did was this... Went into a graphics program and made a big black rectangular jpeg. Then I opened it in both Netscape and IE with the screens maximized and the normal set of toolbars. Then I started resizing the rectangle slowly until it just fit into both the windows with a little bit of the background color showing through.

Now when I'm designing I don't need to switch resolutions to check. I just have a browser window that isn't maximized, and just shows the majority of my rectangle. And I design for that.

Hence on my system there's an assload of white space on my pages. But it looks fine at 800 x 600.

I agree with Johnny, though. The more crap I can fit onscreen the better. Doesn't W98 have support for mulitple monitors? Just get another graphics card and set them up next to each other and double your screen space.

That'd be sweet.

It'd be sweeter if it worked well. It's fine as long as you don't start running games -- then things start to crash and it's a horrible nightmare.

I used to use Litestep, a shell replacement for Windows, which had a really great virtual desktop app, but I gave it up in favor of having a working desktop. I haven't found a decent virtual desktop utility for Windows though.
