It's become routine. I get up before dawn, go to work, shop while driving home, head to the computer lab carrying my legal files and letters but just waste time online till bedtime, go home, get not
enough sleep, do it again. If i go home and take a nap, I could stop by the club tonight after my bedtime. Lynette will be expecting me.
I drove around looking for a haircut for less than $12. Found a couple places but they were closed today.
Ok I got nothing. This comic will need to be reworked.
Please stand by.

There hasn't been much sexy supreme court news lately. So we bring you instead,
This just in!
This just in! Police in a boston have seized what they thought might be terrorists bombs, and have arrested two of the might be terrorists bombers!
The cops wasted up to a million on these shenanigans.
Turned out the devices were ads for Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Imbolc is one of the high holidays for my people. You folks know it as groundhog's day. I celebrated by having an actual date, probably my first in years. We snuggled on his bed and watched a movie.*
[the part of the groundhog is played here by the penny arcade squirrel]

Here in the computer lab, a young asian woman in a black leather mini is sitting in front of me. I think she caught me looking. Twice now.
was that a smile or a leer?

I guess i'll have to stop referring to him as "this guy i'm stalking." henceforth, "Joey." I'd met him 5 years ago.. it takes me a while to get up the nerve to ask someone out. he was coy at first.
It was six degrees out, so when i called and asked if he could come out and play, he suggested we stay in.

Note to self: write to amory and ben about if stripcreator can use their characters from roguerobot.
It's warmed all the way up to 27 degrees, hence the background. I havent called dan back, so I guess I'm not going to roller derby tonight.
The rest of this comic will have to wait. I'm at the coffeehouse, with a twenty minute limit and an apple with a one button mouse, so it takes half the twent minutes to look up my password and log in.
I wasted my 3 hours at the library googling naughty utube videos instead of writing interogatories for the jail lawsuit. Found a nice claymation one about a family of penguins...
punchline later if ever. meanwhile i did make a new set "other people's comics" unlike mine, those might be funny.

I forget who said it.. work is 10% inspiration, 90% not getting distracted by the internet. Today was typical. I came to the lab with plans to outline the interogatories for one of my lawsuits, but...
Vic from the coffeehouse last night answered my mail, thanked me for giving him gmail, i sent him the link of wil wheaton's picture of vic's company's truck and some personal notes. He'd added me at

myspace so i checked my myspace and noticed that collin had added me. he's the cute doorman at the club who never talks to me.
one thing led to another and i have an hour left before bedtime and i haven't started the work i came here to do.

This why i now work in a factory, screwing nuts onto bolts. Fewer distractions = more work done.
I was late getting here today because I finished reading that book about Chuck Taylor.

Cults 29-17
Got a very few hours sleep. Went to work. tried to stay awake while putting 6000 nuts and 6000 screws into little packages while the boss played the light jazz station. 3 below outside.
I forsee an endless stream of " went to work.. god am i tired." comics. that'll be my life now.
www.ifilm.com/superbowl/18373
except for thursday, when i'll be even tireder, if i go to that goth charity slave auction wednesday. i'm probably too tired to go to the club tonight.
after work i went to my post office box. irs refund from 2003 for $2.02. letter from the irs offering to give me back $3,140.70 of the money they stole from me last year. letters from lawyers and bank
It's more than i can handle right now. I've opened the envelopes, but not gonna think through it all tonight. My 2001 nervous breakdown came on the day i opened and read all those threatening letters.
A check came and I collected rent, so I can pay my rent, or the plumber. I'll have my first paycheck soon.

It's a friday, so of course i'm wasting time online instead of getting urgent work done. I didn't get fired today, but I've been moved to a different department, which might not be a good sign.
It will at least get me away from the ghetto coworker - the noise was driving me crazy.
Yesterday I left here early because somebody pulled the fire alarm. I went home, watched goodbye girl and a fred astaire movie.
Tomorrow I'll find some new excuse for not getting work done on my cases. This work avoidance problem is why i work in a warehouse, not a law office.
It's warming up a bit, from 5 to 25 degrees. No joke today. I'm kinda burnt out right now.

It's a saturday night. I had a flat tire coming back from the computer lab. I'm parked at a tire store, but it's closed. I jacked it up, took the lug nuts off, but the tire's stuck to the wheel.
So I walked to the coffeehouse, making comics, drinking espresso, waiting for inspiration.
One plan is to throw hot water on it. Another plan is to walk home, get help from my roommate. Last resort is call the tow company. It's saturday, so I can put it off till tomorrow as long as its
ready by monday. I had gotten one memo done today, a rough draft anyway, but several more are pressing with looming deadlines.
I don't know if it's this old mac, or the district court's website that won't open, but I can't access the site i want right now.
So I'm making comics, staying calm, drinking coffee. It's what and where I'd usually be at this time anyway. That's all for now. Time to walk home I guess.

I clicked on a google ad at stripcreator. It had this quiz:
If one monkey leaves the jungle go ing 10mph and another monkey leaves the city going 8 mph in The Opposite Direction?
http://poorgren.com/ the comic wasn't funny, but i liiked the quiz.
1) 5.6 minutes 10.2 % 4 votes 2) Evolution? 33.3 % 3) I like monkeys! 56.4 % 22 votes
like most people, i voted #3; I like monkeys.

Work1 went ok. It's work2 that's the problem. For the 6 people who read my comic but aren't among the three people who read my blog, sometimes when i say work I mean my day job at Screw U Inc.
It went ok today. New desk, new duties as a shipping clerk, same offensive rap and black power radio station that was the problem at the previous desk.
Sometimes when I say work it's the letters and memos I'm avoiding writing, escaping instead into blogs and webcomics and emails. I drove here after work1 planning to work2, but was overcome with
with despair in the parking lot. I made good progress on a memo saturday, but hung it up sunday to go watch tv with a nice guy i met online.
http://www.crescatsententia.net/ archives/2007/02/09/#007021
So i'm trying to balance the need to write the damn memos with the need to avoid falling into pits of despair, so I'm making comics and feeling better.
I got some nice email from a blogger - we're having an ontological discussion about pink unicorns.

I haven't made a comic in a few days. I've been snowed in. A foot of snow, the library was closed, the coffeeshop was closed, even work let us out early. I felt frostbitten just walking from the car.
Both my cases could be in trouble because I'm getting behind as to deadlines. I haven't written the letters I need to write.
I'm feeling ok, getting by on not much sleep, bitter cold out. The cold killed my plants but the roaches are fine. Speaking of roaches, I ritually cremated the medicine plant that died.
For valentine's we kicked back, watched movies and drank hot chocolate. Philadephia story and that one where audrey hepburn is bogart's chauffer's daughter.
I can't get a sense yet how I'm doing at the job. Otherwise, I have hassles but few real crises. I have a few scores i need to settle.
I'm just about caught up on defense and able to move slowly into offense - I'm going to be solvent, a clean record, eventually maybe fix my credit rating, get a real computer again.

Did, saturday: woke up at 4 am. That's an unfortunate pattern lately. Drove thru a snowstorm to work, finished my 40 hours. Went to the library, finished a memo i started a month ago. Coffeeshop, bed.
Did sunday: paid the rent. collected december rent from deadbeat roomate, renegotiated rent arrangement. Got to the library right when it opened, ready to try to work.
all i need to get done today is: print and file amicus brief, email tenant, buy a pick and shovel, call a plumber, write the irs, draft a contract to sell the house, prepare a conflict of interest ..
.. memo, draft an ethics complaint against a certain prosecutor, email 6 lawyers, draft a motion to extend time for discovery, make a better list.
I'll update later today with what i did or didn't get done.
there are a gaggle of undergrads at the next table, gaggelling, so i'm going to move upstairs. they pay tuition, and i'm a freeloader, so i can't complain.
By 5, i proofed and reprinted the amicus, emailed 4 of the lawyers and the client, did the contract and the waiver, e-chatted with a friend about jodie foster, now to make a better list...

make comics read blogs surf news sites surf porn sites search craigslist manhunt and hotornot, check myspace and some bulliten boards, email friends.
5 pm update: did: the waiver, the contract, proofed amicus, emailed tenant, photocopied water bill, emailed the lawyers, converted the file to pdf
synthesis: what i actually got done
didn't yet: write irs, draft discovery motion, oppose motion to dismiss, upload the pdf to the court
tomorrow: work, mail package, mail brief, buy pick and shovel, call plumber, call mom, go to club, pay electric bill, cash check, pay credit card... ok i can't get all that done tomorrow. this week?

www.filthylies.net
One of my favorite webcomics is filthylies.net. Brandon's comic is about two roommates, one straight and cynical, the other gay and naive, and their companion animal, beefsteak.
It's a bit in the vein of penny arcade or roguerobot.com or tucker max.
http://www.filthylies.net/anna.html
Except for penny arcade, being a web comic doesn't pay well, so brandon was excited recently when he got a gig doing a webcomic for a major celebrity.
w00t!

I figured out a new way I can organize my to do lists.
First, I write out the list in my to do list blog, one of my 13 blogger blogs. Then I copy the list so I have two sets.
Then i cut and paste into a word file, give each item a number, and label them in order of importance. The second set, I label in order of which to do first.
Then i can use the sort function in the tables menu to put them in that order.
I did have a productive day, I guess. But it was less than I needed to do. It's 6 pm and I'm wiped out, need sleep. the club doesn't open till 9.
With a few more tricks like that, I can spend all day on the list and never actually do anything.

In last night's exciting episode, I'd made a comic about how web comic E. Nigma of Filtylies.net had landed a great gig doing a comic for the site of a major celebrity, Anna Nicole Smith
*sob*
So i sent it to him,and he wrote back saying it would be ok for stripcreator to use his characters
"it would be ok"
Now i just need to run this by Brad.

The bad news:
I got fired today from ScrewU, inc. Actually, I got fired friday, but they didn't bother to tell me till today, which is cool, since I worked saturday.
"not a good fit" they said.
The good news:
So I spent the day helping my formerlydeadbeat roomate make $70 recycling computer parts, and he gave me $20. It'll be a weekly gig, arranged by my tenant and the other folks at virtual scavengers inc.
The bad news:
Of course I've already blown the money and more, buying gas, printing and fed-exing an amicus brief to the 7th circuit. My law practice is an expensive hobby. One I'll have more time for now.
In a couple hours I'll go to the club and blow the $20 again. Strangely, I feel like celebrating. W00t! Unemployed!

by arbi
2-19-07
did: got fired. (yay!?) went to bank. went shopping. checked in at temp agency. checked in at employment center, made list of job prospects. spent afternoon scrapping at virtual scavengers.
mailed brief. checked mail. messaged brad about filthy lies. printed more copies of brief. commented at volokh and alas a blog.
didn't: the electric company was closed when i got there. i didn't draft the memo or pay the credit card bill or call the plumber or write the irs or much of anything else. dinner was a melted jar
of ice cream. in fact, lunch was a melted jar of passionfruit and mango sorbet. had a decent breakfast tho, got some sleep, need a bath.
the new scrap contract was the best part of the day.. it could turn into some real money, or at least pay the rent.
for now, i'm off to the club. tomorrow, look for work, deliver the brief, make a better list.

The snow started melting today. I'll have to go see if my frozen pipes broke.
I spent 3 hours this morning at a job interview for a hawaii cruise ship.. didn't get the job.
Ran some errands, paid some bills, delivered the amicus, came here where I'm getting nothing much. done.
I'm back to having time but no money, last month was money but no time.
Job fair tomorrow, or some scrapmetal hauling. Still need to make a decent to do list.
I emailed myself a couple dozen craigslist job leads that look promising. I got my last two jobs from craigslist.

The supreme court gave the tobacco companies a present, striking down a punitive damages award, but it's not the landmark some were hoping for.
They decides several other cases we havent read yet.
The Supreme Court will hear an election case, Lopez-Torres, about New York's crazy system for nominating judges.
It's basicly a separation of powers case... can the legislature rig elections, or is that the court's job?
The aardvark has been busy trying to file an amicus brief in the 7th circuit.
The court will probably reject the brief on some technicality.

lost horizon: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0029162
I guess today was a good day. I slept in, watching lost horizon. Then I recycled some scrap computers, went to a job fair and got 5 solid leads, went to the computer recycling warehouse to buy a
computer and stumbled onto my friend teaching a microsoft certification class. I think I'll join the class.
It would be a good excuse for being unemployed right now, I'd like to learn more about computers, and there's this one cute young guy who was making serious eye contact with me.
The other thing I did today was applied to be on a game show.
I'll probably offer to serve on the board of directors of the computer recycling warehouse, and a do a little grantwriting for them. My friends recently acquired control of it.
My friend joey emailed and asked how I was doing, so this comic's for him. The other joey, the cute guy I was stalking, hasn't answered my last email.. I might have to call him.. I hate phones.

I got fired on Monday. Today I made an appointment to rent out my body for medical experiments. It would pay $2900 for a few days work if I get the gig. Done it before.
Just now I got a call from a producer of a new game show in New York. They liked my application and want me to send in a 3minute videotape.
It's the kind of thing where I probably would only actually get the prize if the show ever airs, if I even win. But what the heck. Beats working.
My sister calls this sort of thing "prosperity consciousness".. you just have to leave yourself open to letting money find you. Worked for her.
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid= 07/02/21/1329256
So far all I've done today is catch up on my emails.. I was so determined to make some progress on the memos.

I've been thinking about Tom Hank's movie castaway. He gets stuck on a desert island, and slowly goes mostly mad from isolation and loniness. he copes, but it's tough.
This is the theme that vonnegut talks a lot about in his books. Vonnegut lives in this town and once did a reading in this coffeeshop, but he's not very social. I should be careful to avoid these digr
guess i file this one under cerebus syndrome
digressions because there's not enough room for text in a comic, so now I can't finish my thought, unless i extend another three panels.
anyway.. see it's snowing outside, so i cant do the social things i planned tonight.. we are all castaways, living lives brutally apart from each other.
So we make comics, and blog, and write songs, and drink too much, or not enough.
For those of you who skipped solipcism 101 back in junior college...
It's an evolutionary psychology thing. Some of us are part of the herd, others are loners who don't need the herd, but some of us go through life feeling like outcasts, cut off and cast away. So we ma

the continuing saga of how much i'm enjoying being fired
I think I covered the part about not getting the hawaii cruise ship job. Did i get to the part where i ran into a computer A+ certification course taught by a friend of mine? I guess i did.
I have an interview set up for tuesday that would be a medical courier gig, steady three days a week at ok pay.
Last night I stopped in to see my buddy the Jewelry Doctor. He's lost a couple of his stores and lots of money since i saw him last, but he's making money on both the lots I sold him,and he offered me
a job once the building is up and the business going.
all for now. sorry this doesn't make more sense.. it's just my life as it happens.
I'm not going to hold my breath. he also bought me dinner, fresh pizza, first time in years I've had that. They were shocked I got the veggie kind.

Yesterday wasn't so good. Came outside to a flat tire. Walked to the lilly interview, but ended up rescheduling it for next week.. some of the fine print made me nervous.
Wasted all day online and didn't do the things I'd planned. Walked home, changed the tire, got the flat fixed, went to class, which was cancelled, talked to a plumber, studied for a drug test.
The interview this morning went better - I feel like a have a shot. Nice lady, easy job, not many applicants. Wore second-best suit. It would pay the rent, 3 days a week.
Now I'm back to wasting the day online again. Must mail the dvd I made for the game show audition.
Space below left blank.. maybe i'll get something done.
Must finish memo one and begin memo two. Not very motivated. Could study for class, or make a better list, or read over the old list.

Today we celebrate St. Gabriel Possenti Day!
He was a dapper gun-totin' dragon-killin' fag-bashin' protector of fair maidens. In his 24 years, he saved a village and was a model of piety and marksmanship.
Sort of like the grey mouser, eh?
Or the dread justice roberts. Make a heck of a movie.
Anyway, we nearly made it through february. It'll be wet for awhile, but not yet too hot to stand.

Recently the court heard argument about whether cops are allowed to crash into your car if you try to get away from car-crashing-cops.
And the Libertarian Party and others have a case about primary elections in Washington state. Like Beaver v Clingman, it's less about the result, than the process the court uses.

After a night of too much cable, no sleep, too much coffee, my stress tolerance was way low, and I was crying while trying to sort through my papers for something that had to be in the mail yesterday.
wuthering heights, never on sunday, an oscar winning tom and jerry toon, something with olivia deHavilland, and Citizen Kane.
http://friendlyhostility.com/ leasticoulddo.com
So I came here, reprinted the missing document, nice email from my ex,
and then i destressed by catching up on fave webcomics "least i could do" and "friendly hostility"
I found a decent parking place, and it stopped sleeting. The news wasn't cheery - SA to kill elephants, japan killing whales, darfur war crimes, uganda ceasefire ends, etc., but i've been tuning out
the news at least since 9/11. So i'm ok I guess. barely.

today, just like every other day,
I stress about all the work i need to do, so i get my files, drive to the computer lab, with a plan in my head to write three memos.
then i log on, check my email, and go make webcomics or read blogs. anything to avoid work.
email was pretty good today - emails from my sister, a guy who was my best friend in 3rd grade, a guy I had a law practice with before my nervous breakdown, some spam, a new hotornot yesclick, and the
guy i'm currently platonicly dating - we watch movies on sundays, and he actually reads these comics. apparently no one else does.
Snailmail today was a mixed bag - IRS, some checks I deposited, the one newsletter i subscribe to, and 3 letters from lawyers in one of my cases, that I'm not looking forward to opening/responding to.
In the next exciting episode, I'll compare my current morass to this morning, when I was standing in a deep mudpuddle, digging it deeper.

These 'comics' arent funny, and have too much text, but I need to vent somewhere, and it beats myspace.
I've had so little sleep this week, I haven't even gone out to the club, which is my lame excuse for a social life. So I woke up before noon, and my roommate and I went +dug the hole a little deeper.
We are almost to the leak in the water pipe to my rental house. There's a big leak and a small leak, and we found and put a patch on the big leak, so the water bill should ok now.
Pickaxe $20. Shovel $5 Clamp $15. Mud in my hair, big gash in my hand that will probably get infected.
The roommate is a bum who is usually late with the rent, but he's been working it off with chores like this. The apartment lease says no roommates, so he's the best i can do.
I need to fix the leaks and get the empty half rented out, so I can afford to live without a job a bit longer. The courier place didn't call today, so I guess I didn't get the job.
I saved enough this month I can pay the rent this month without having to use my credit card. Next month will need a new plan.
So I'll need to spend the next three weeks applying for twenty jobs to get one I'll hold for three weeks, shampoo, rinse, repeat.
That broken laptop I found has been stolen from my car, it seems, oh well. Hard come, easy go.

jalr.com - just another lab rat dot com
I've been working hard on breaking that cycle of where I go to the computer lab to work but don't get anything done, just surf the web and make comics.
So saturday and sunday I didn't even get out of bed.
www.lillyclinic.com testwiththebest.com
Actually saturday went ok, because I cleaned the house a little - it needed it - and a friend came over. First time I've had a friend over, since I moved in last april.
Sunday went ok, cuz i was home when a job lead called. If I get it it will pay better than the gig I was turned down for this morning.
www.craigslist.org - gigs
I'm trying to rent my body to medical labs to use for drug testing. Eli Lilly turned me down today and I'm a little bummed out.
I don't have a lot of other job prospects right now. update: appointment wednesday morning in evansville.

I feel like a borg. They have me hooked up to a holter heart monitor. if an ekg is like a picture, the heart monitor is like a movie. I wear it for 24 hours then drive back to evansville and wait to
see if I get into the study. It's gone ok so far. Minor glitch when the doctor said, "so you have hepatitus c!" I'm like, no.
I think I passed the piss test and the blood test and the getting there on time test and the signing the 43 consent forms test.
Now it's mostly a matter of if my heart rate fits the profile they want.
It will start next week if I get in,and I would make enough to pay the rent this year. I figure if I can do 4 studies a year I won't need a job, and I can hang out online and make comix.
If I don't get in this one there are two more to screen for.

in which my local mcpaper does an article on webcomics, including one by a guy from the coffeeshop. they even got it about right.
"Other strips are essentially illustrated diaries, chronicling the artist's daily work or love life."

did: slept, dishes trash collected rent paid bills, gardening.
Joell: this is your receipt for $300 for march rent. Don't forget to pay the water bill before they shut it off.
Didn't: memo 1, memo two, memo 3, letters, make better list.
Brad: your estimated share of the dec, january, feb utilities comes to $160. Good job on the windows. I blew the $300 on paying the electric, water and gas bills.
To do: pay credit card. Hang out at coffee shop because the library is closing early for spring break.
Ivy: thanks for the encouraging word, infrequently heard. Next to accentuatenegative, you are still my fave stripper.

I've been making these comics a few years now i think. Today I was able to enter my password, ******, without having to cut and paste it from email.
For the past couple days, I've been driving a lot, to and from a medical center where I hope they'll use me for experiments (but not vivisection)
Evansville indiana is one of those large small towns that just kind of left over from when rivers were the highway system. I found a cool veggie coffeehouse with good books and good conversation, and
a food co-op. My town is 5 times that size and has no food coop or veggie coffeehouse. I found both gay bars, but they were closed in the daytime.
I'll hear next week if i got the gig. If not, I have another screening in michigan, or i can try eli lilly again in a few weeks
That's all i got for now. The coffeehouse is too noisy to try to do real work, and i'm not too happy with this comic, but i had a couple days to catch up on, so it'll do.

Yesterday I had a pretty good excuse for not getting out of bed and watching tv all day.
I was sick as a dog, probably from no sleep those two days I drove to Evansville twice.
Tomorrow I won't have that excuse.
Today as usual I wasted all day online instead of writing three memos. I read an important second amendment case, helped my expartner find rare cigarettes, did more research on the clinical trials
I'll be doing, but really didn't accomplish anything.

The DC circuit has decided an important case striking down a handgun ban on second amendment grounds.
Our friend Eugene Volokh was quoted in the opinions, and has commentary on his blog, volokh.com
The case reads the second amendment to mean what it says, putting it at odds with most of the other circuits.
Likely to go to the supreme court.

We'd have more to say, but we only have three panels and the library closes in ten minutes.

Disclaimer:
These "comics" follow a pattern by now so familar as to have become monotonous. I whine about the stuff I'm not getting done, the memos I haven't written, and what a mess my life is.
Some people can afford psychoanalysis; I can afford stripcreator.
An example of the genre:
Today, for example, I got up, made a list of what I hoped to do today, lost the list, made a few phone calls, made the list again, had a panic attack, went back to bed, got up, did three things
on the list, and got to the computer lab with barely enough time to make a comic, much less write a memo, because this is spring break and it closes at 5.
did/didn't 3/14
I went to the bank to get money to pay the guy who's fixing my laptop, found the power cord for it, notarized and mailed a document, talked on the phone with the IRS, spent $7 on documents for a back
background check for that nasa gig i'm applying for. details in next comic.

www.bedreststudy.com ?
So I had a call the other day from nasa. It's about a study they are doing that I want to apply for. It would be a years pay for a few months work, and by work I mean lying in bed playing on a laptop.
I won't get the gig unless I pass the blood test and the background test and the psych test and the lab screenings, so I'm not counting on it.. but it would be cool.
i'm almost glad i got fired from the nuts and bolts factory, screwyou inc. still, an actual paycheck would be nice someday.

today i didn't even get out of bed. well, until after dark anyway.
a couple phone calls, a bit of googling, and i'll go see if the laptop is ready, but basicly i did nothing. then off to the club to get drunk.
on monday i turned down an offer of sex from a guy i like.. told him i'd forgotten how. so i hope i see him again some time and get his number for future reference.
the guy i watch movies with some sundays is a banker, so i'm seeing if his bank can loan my tenant the money to buy the house -this is mostly to find out if my tenant is serious enough to at least
overheard even as i wrote this: "this website is for the ultimate nerd" - oh he meant xcdc, which i have linked at my blog
appy for the loan - he's been stalling. I tried to look up some of the records i need to prove to nasa that i have a clean record, and they arent online but i got a number to call.
right now i'm at the coffeehouse, and some of the other users here are even geekier than i am. it's a gamer coffeehouse, the gencon crowd.
