Hey, you are the new kid in town! Welcome to the lab. I am supposed to show you around.
That sounds great. I am pretty eager to join you folks.
After a while
So, I showed you the ways to your desk, the Prof's office, the library and the classrooms.
Thank you. Metaphorically, you have showed me the pathways to knowledge and academic success.
Very clever. By the way, speaking of metaphors, these are what we seniors call - 'the roads less traveled by'.
You mean I should take the roads less traveled by, right? Or do you?

Now, be warned that many of these roads partially overlap on the roads to interesting places.
You mean the roads often taken are underneath the roads less taken.. ha ha
Your first 'self help' assignment is to find the shortest detours with minimum overlap.
Hey, but you can show me some of these detours so my orientation is faster.
Always remember that a graduate student's life is full of lonely toils. You are only helping yourself by chosing to do research.
Alright, I get it. Just tell me you don't want the Prof to get hold of you somewhere on the way.

Take your time. Once you are done with that, I'll give you a time reasonably well founded schedule of the lab activities, and more importantly the Prof's activities.
And that's the data for my next assignment, right?
Right. Your next 'self help' assignment will be to find yourself an optimal schedule so that you are not stuck at your desk when not needed.
So that I need not compromise on the fun stuff. These assignments have a great utility.
Once you have defined your space and time, you can consider yourself to be launched into the research lifestyle.
Hey, can you be my co-advisor?

Another newbie, and the same old orientation cycle. It's more like childcare. I wonder what lures them into this.
Tell me about it.
Unless you have the hunger within, it's futile. You cannot make me hungry. Can you?
Oh, no. Nobody could make you more hungry than you already were. You were on it right from day one.
I am talking about motivation to do research.
I am sure you are.

Working late on a Friday, eh? What plans for the weekend?
Er.. What are you doing tomorrow? Want to Hang Out?
Looks like they too can do without the weekend. Anyway, do you want to go somewhere with me?
Sure. Let's go home and watch something. You can borrow the second series of "Not Going Out" from me.

Friday evening
Alright. I am going to go home and work like a good girl over the weekend. Got to make up for the Wasted Time.
Man, it was all the night outs playing Grope Geek Girls that did it for me. I did reread the whole Tintin series though.
Monday morning
Fine. I didn't exactly commit a sin by letting it lose on the weekend. A fresh week is starting. With enough focus, I can finish off all the pending stuff this week.
Enough of prying on unreal chicks. Time to move on. I seriously need to get Perspective. Heard it's good. Triple-G was fun, though.
Wednesday evening
Well, I did waste some time, which will just be a delta t in the Bigger Context. But I have two more days. Go girl! It's a test of character.
Or four days more. Note: don't goof off hunting down wily girls, and get rid of that stupid 'push clergymen from rooftops' game.
