Is there anyway to see the average ratings given for our strips? It seems that there would be, if so than where?

We used to be able to once, before the dark times and the exodus of our people...

Fuck it - I did this joke once before and no-one liked it.

I just thought I'd revive this thread, just to be a dick. AND because I greatly enjoy inflicting my own personal comic taste on other people's comics when I read them -- and I'd like to know I'm getting results.

Ratings -- I love, ratings... la la la

And, just out of curiousity, what's the problem with adding ratings? It can't be too hard to code -- does the ratings database take up too much space on the server? Is there a problem with mutexes? (I don't know PHP, so I don't know how hard it could possibly be.) Seems like all you'd have to do is store two integers -- a sum of all ratings and the number of ratings given so far...

The whole stat collection/collation thing is still there, but Brad took down the actual display of the results, since he never managed to figure out a cheat-proof system. I mean, why have the stats at all if they are going to be grossly inaccurate, and it just encourages braindead monkeys to sit there cheating until they're on top? He has a secret URL with the comic rankings on it... :)

Actually, I can live without knowing who has the best comic ON THE SITE. As I recall, the way it worked before the ratings were done as a strict sum, not an average, so comic #15 would always beat comic #69815 no matter what. I'm just curious which of my own comics rate best, and I want to be able to tell anyone who doesn't reload his comic with "10" 4 million times how good (or horrendous) his comic is.

Let the monkeys reload until their computer explodes for all I care.

I'm much the same to be honest. I don't think a ratings system is that important. The only real advantage I can think of it giving us would be if random comics on the front page could be limited to a minimum number of points, so only reasonably good ones will greet new visitors.

That's just me being a snob, though...

I think it might not be a bad idea to see our own ratings. If I create a comic illustrating the perils of dicing food when drunk and a thousand spontaneous combustion comics, and I see the rating of the one is much higher than the thousand, then I may be more inclined to create the former, and thus funnier comics are made.

I hope that made an inkling of sense.

Some of us don't always read what's on the front page... and consequently rate everything one.

Hmm, I remember when we could see our ratings, or at least when we could sort our comics in order of rating.

Out of all my comics, this one had the highest rating:

17922

So, uh, I'm not sure that the ratings are really THAT helpfull.

I remember that this was my number one strip for a long time. I was frustrated, because the ones I thought were much better were much further down the rankings.

689

Wow, a three-digit comic... remember those?

Well, the ratings system before was always screwed up because it counted ratings as a sum total of all the ratings you'd ever gotten. It didn't take an average. Therefore whichever comic had been rated the most time would probably be on top, regardless of what it was rated.

Which is why we can simply add an integer for "number of times rated" and fix all our problems! And bring back ratings! Yay!

A lot of the buggered up comic ratings were, I suspect, down to ne'er-do-wells like me. I used to give every strip that came up 10.

Problem is that then a brand new comic that gets a ten for it's first rating will suddenly be number one.

Over a year ago, I suggested that strips get scored on an average, but don't get into the rankings until they have received a minimum of ten or twenty votes (like IMDb has with its voting system).

Might be too much trouble, though...
