and nothing can every verify it, does it ever get counted? Here is a site devoted to the topic.
http://www.nas.com/beddill/fairvoting/ ("If you cannot trust the way your votes are counted, nothing much else in politics matters!")

So what do you think? Should we trust that the good corporations backing Bush will be fair or should we ask for an audit trail?

It looks like the problem is global.

Letting Joe Public decide his own fate seems a bit stupid to me, how fortunate it doesn't actually happen.

That's precisely the kind of attitude that will stymie any progressive debate. You assume Joe Public is too stupid/ignorant to be able to decide his own fate. It just so happens that the principle of democracy is that everyone has a say in their fate.

Just remember, the president of a democracy is a strong leader who is ready, willing, and able to lay down your life for his country.

Now I wouldn't call that fortunate: Look at what happened last time we let someone into the office who didn't win the popular vote!

Democracy is five wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner.

The wolves being the beer swilling, NASCAR enthusiast hicks, and the sheep being the remaining 4% of the population.

There's nothing wrong with debating it. Nothing to say you can't debate something you have no control over....interesting word 'stymie', hadn't seen it before.

Yup.

I'm not being funny, but the key word is 'principle' - very different when it comes to praxis. :/
