Brad April 22, 2004 9:07 PM	There's a new obscenity filter to help me get less complaints. It can be turned on and off on the upper right of the menu bar.

The filter is just a dumb search and replace on a word list (which will be changing over time), it's nothing fancy. It defaults to on for new visitors to the site but can easily be toggled. It also currently defaults to off when you log in to your account (not sure if it'll stay that way or not). I'll be adding a warning to the register a new account page soon.

In case you're worried, I'm not planning to crack down on people using swears or anything. The whole point of this is so that I hopefully don't get complaints from parents and teachers anymore and people can use the site at work without tripping off adult content filters. I think this system is a pretty good compromise that helps more than it hurts.

With that in mind, here's a warning: if you're going to go out of your way to try and sneak swears through, I'm going to ban your account. I know it would be funny. Please resist.

choadwarrior April 22, 2004 9:17 PM	If you get any complaints from teachers, just tell them to use the same filter the school district i work for uses--i've never been able to get past it to view Stripcreator.

Godd idea! I am keeping my swear filter set to stun mothercunter etc. (i.e on)and I hope I can just continue doing what I do on SC. Where does the swear filter stand on racist terms?

There is a real opportunity for fun here though. Instead of ****'ing out the swear words why don't you replace them with watered down versions? It could be sublime man.

cunt - vulva
shit - effluent
fuck - beefing
twat - Boinky33
etc.

habnem April 23, 2004 5:48 AM	It looks like the filter works great, and it really freaked me out this morning. My suggestion: put the control in the "edit account" tab. The way it looks right now, anyone who recognizes the word "obscenity" will figure out how to disable the filter in about two seconds.

Is there a reason to hide it? I was kinda hoping that the filter being easily disabled even by non-users would mean there'd be no reason to try and work around it.

I actually wanted to replace them with just lightly dashed out versions because I find those funnier. Like f-ck and sh-t and so on, but it turns out it's really hard to do that while preserving the case of the original swear word.

There are only a couple in there right now but I guess I'll add them as I think of them. I couldn't find a decent swear list so the wordlist is currently limited by my own imagination.

You should censor out "garlic bread" because, according to the racial slur database, that is a racial slur for Italians. However, I don't think I'd be offended if someone walked up to me and called me garlic bread. Or macaroni.

That's over 13%. More than one in eight comics has that tetragram. And two or three of them aren't even cowboy physics comics.

Brad April 23, 2004 11:46 AM	Yeah, I'm not sure what to do about swears in usernames yet. I'm not filtering favorites and stuff, but I think I might eventually. The filter isn't really meant to be good (it's impossible to write a good one), it's just meant to be a brute force way of keeping swears on the down-low to the casual visitor.

Since it is censored elsewhere, I figured that this was a bug.

I enjoyed the article (didn't have time to finish it, got about 1/3 of the way through), but more or less it's the schools themselves and why they do what they do that I have a problem with. For example: tax hikes.
