The only thing that could spoil this would be if Kissinger was somehow appointed to Attorney General.

No, it's some Texas friend of Bush's. Name's Gonzales.

As some of you know, I'm a librarian. And AG Ashcroft once called librarians "hysterical" because of our response to the USA PATRIOT act. That was a Moment for me. Being called "hysterical" by a Pentecostal is like being called crazy by the neighborhood cat lady.

So long, Ashcroft.

This is like when Peter Mandelson and Alastair Campbell slunk off over here.

Ashcroft doesn't even have the decency to take the rest of the chumps with him.

You misspelled "chimps."

It would have been better, if instead of just resigning, Ashcroft had strapped a bomb to himself and exploded it in his resignation meeting, screaming, "I REPENT, LORD!"

Ashcroft was behind torture, he said it was legal...

.... as has the new Attorney General nominee- the new guy is the lawyer that drafted up the opinion citing the legal reasoning behind the move.

Ya gotta love the 3,000 foot neon sign flashing DESPOTISM that we can't seem to see, as a nation.

Anyone wanna bet that the only reason Gonzales was elected AG was so the Republicans would get a few more percentages of the Hispanic vote, thus cementing New Mexico as a red state?

What can I say... I'm a conspiracy theorist.

Oh well. Even if he's a bastard, I have a hard time imagining anyone could do a more horrific job at stripping civil liberties than Ashcroft.

NPR reported last night that opposition to the Gonzales nomination is coming from none other than senior military officers in the JAG Corps. A spokesman said the JAG has no interest in flouting the Geneva conventions as Gonzales has.

Awesome. Maybe there is some shred of integrity left in the military.

I think we are going to be horribly surprised. The guy already said the Geneva Convention was "quaint"

This in the ears of the average nut-job who's come in from Jordan to fight sounds like "The Americans will rape your wives and sisters and torture you like a dog if they capture you. Fight them to the death."

Civilised rules of conduct during times of war prevent bad feelings running deep further down the line. The ordinary German soldiers of WW2 we can forgive as they treated their POW's well. The Nazis we cannot as they did horrific things to the Jews, Poles and many other groups. Many soliders still hate the Japanese because they mistreated prisoners.

You cannot just "disregard" pieces of this convention. His comments will have undoubtedly fuelled jihadists reasoning not to be taken alive, prolonging conflict and increasing casualties.

And that's even before he's started removing more constitutional rights...

Isn't trusting NPR's news about the same as trusting Rush Limbaugh's?

Not necessarily. The problem with NPR is because it is an organization, it has a somewhat diverse broadcasting base.

It's kind of like the the internet, and even StripCreator. Some of the stuff is notable, true, and worth paying attention to. A lot of it is pure shit.

I trust nothing. The senior officer's voice was playing on the radio machine. NPR recorded it with their recording machines. That's how they do wireless radio these days.

The guy said the JAG had no interest in any departure from the Geneva conventions, and in fact wanted to adhere to same. There is a reason why military officers might like to adhere to certain standards in the conduct of war. Others here have capably outlined those reasons.

NPR's news is not much different from the networks' (excepting Fox) and the major newspapers.

BTW, Rush Limbaugh's show isn't news. It's a pathetic dope fiend ranting incoherently into a microphone.

Hispanics voted Republican because our values earned their respect, not because we promised them a payoff.

Who do you think we are? Democrats?

It's funny because MaKK said Republicans have values and wasn't being sarcastic.

In other news, Colin Powell, the last sort-of cool member in the Bush Cabinet resigned. And to prove how fucking stupid Bill O'Reilly is, O'Reilly spectated that Bill Clinton (no typos here) would replace him. Add one to the "Jihad'd" list. Obviously, cabinet member and professional scumfuck Condi Rice is probably going to take his place. All this reminds me of is why I really hope Bush never gets impeached or assassinated; three words: "President Dick Cheney."

Don't worry. He only had a "common cold" last week. With any luck he'll have stepped down or been forced to step down before the mid-way point of Bush's 2nd term.

True. Dick Cheney is the Emperor Palpatine to George Bush's Darth Vader. While Bush is merely a tool of higher powers, Cheney is the real incarnation of evil in the White House. If he became President things would be even worse. If that's possible.

....

PS: Condi Rice looks like Jar-Jar Binks.
