Okay, so down in Caption Mountain, we've been having a heated discussion, as heated as those CM discussions get. The dude working http://www.animesucks.com is clearly a hypocrite and uninformed in many places, yet points out some very true things. Like Breast Missile. And the overabundance of tentacles.

Yet I'd really like to show this guy movies like Spirited Away, Akira, Ninja Scroll, heck, he'd probably shed a tear or two at Grave of the Fireflies.

So, view this enigmatically wrong site at your own discretion and discuss.

Meh. He's just another assbite with an opinion. I'd probably hate many of things he enjoys, too. Nothing to get worked up over.

I can't believe there are people here who don't like the same things I do, or who enjoy things that I personally don't care for. It's outrageous!

You're obviously all ignoramouses or weird, nerd-like freaks. I hope your arms and legs rot off while demonic vultures pluck the eyes from your skull, and that you FEEL EVERY AGONIZING MINUTE of it.

There are truly some great movies in the anime genre, as well as some shit ones. Do not dismiss an entire medium because of such things as Dragonball Z.

I have a certain affinity for Dragonball Z, but only because I don't think I've ever seen such a long series predicated on fights that lasts for thirty episodes and no one really dies.

I think most anime is dreck, and it has been horrifying to see good American Saturday morning cartoons replaced by mindless garbage from Japan. Thank goodness that excellent American and Canadian cartoons do have a foothold on the Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. Still, not all anime has been bad. The movie Princess Mononoke was excellent, Digimon has been worth watching at times, and the anime version of Teen Titans has been growing on me, even though I still wish it was by Dini and Timm.

One the one hand, I agree. On the other, the derivative dross impinging on your Saturday morning 'toon time doesn't represent most of the stuff that adult anime fans are geeking out over.

It seems like fans and non-fans are speaking two different languages sometimes. And fans come off as geeks because you have to obsessively pursue a narrow and obscure interest in order to track down the good stuff here in the West.

When I was young, I always felt sort of sad for the anime cartoon companies, because I thought they only drew that way because they were poor and couldn't afford good artists or dialogue or stories and stuff.

Seriously.

I let my little sister watch Speed Racer without violently taking over the television because I thought, maybe if they got some viewers, they might be able to get better and do GOOD cartoons.

If I had only known, then....

Hmm... Sort of the way I used to feel about Hanna-Barbera.

Like attracts like. The crappola that finds its way here from Japan does so because of its similarity to the kind of wretched American crap that already has demonstrated its ability to attract an audience.

Nobody involved in television programming gives two shits about art. They care about dollar signs. A piece of shit from Japan, already in the can and only in need of new voice-overs, is alot cheaper than (and has the potential to attract as many viwers as) a steaming, freshly produced pile from any American production company.

It still doens't reflect on the best of what Japanese animation has to offer, any more than Yogi fucking-Bear reflects on the best of what American animation has to offer.

True. People should be judging American cartoons based on Feed the Kitty or Duck Amuck or even The Incredibles rather than Scooby Doo and Adam Ant. Same goes for the Japanese. For every Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh, there's My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Akira, etc., etc....

Akira, I loved. I love any movie that fucks with your head. Spirited away, not so much. I'm not saying it was bad at all, just not my kinda thing.

Though, does anyone know if the people who did Spirited Away did that one Animatrix short where there's an old house that's a "rendering glitch" and the kids can all do weird matrix stuff?

Well, Spirited Away is technically a kids movie, so I could see why you didn't enjoy it so much.

And I don't think Miyazaki would have done an Animatrix short. It's just not his thing.
