I've made a new character to fit in with the forum users, and I'd appreciate some feedback before I submit these. Yes I pinched a few bits from existing characters, I tried unsuccessfully several times to mimic dexx's style from scratch, so I didn't think anyone would mind.

Please excust the quality due to the JPG artifacting, this will not be present in the actual work (which is in GIF format), this was the easist way to put up a preview.

I've also included various poses and expressions, and a different outfit, I'd like them all added, I'm praying a few actually make it, so can people please advise what they do and don't like, and suggest any improvements.

Without further ado, I give you Injokester:

Not too shabby. Of course, you'll need the Brad Seal of Approval.

Of course. And DexX's, who I'm tracking down now.

I don't think you need DexX's approval.

The character's a little boring, I think. While I like a wide range of motions, I don't think the poses are different enough to require THAT many of them.

Also, if bandwidth must be given up, I'd prefer it be given up on something a little more... different from what we have now.

Thanks for the feedback! I don't know if you can own the copyright on a mouth or pair of eyes, to I thought I should clear it with DexX first.

I only whipped these up this morning, so I can do more work on poses. To be honest I'd like to own the rights to the art in my own strips, so I'm going to make new characters to replace the ones I've used.

I will also be working on other characters, and variety will be my focus for a lot of it. This is just where I decided to start.

I dont' want to sound discouraging. I really love the idea of more art on here, but I'd prefer to see stuff that's more different, such as... I don't know. National characatures. (i.e. a Chinese guy with a conical hat, squinty eyes, and a fumanchu; an African guy with wildly patterned colored robes and a pillbox hat; a Sweedish girl in a lacy apron and pigtails, etc. etc.)

I guess that stuff should go in suggestions, eh?

That's anything but discouraging, if I make this stuff I'd like to see it get on the site, and I think a lot of people here will agree with your suggestions.

2 days ago I couldn't draw cartoons to save myself, but after spending an hour with a pencil and paper the night before last I found out I'm a natural. I filled half a sketchbook yesterday, and my stuff is starting to look nice and consistent. As such the stuff I want to do for myself will now be done on paper, and the art I do on the computer while I'm supposed to be working will be focused on requests from people here. ^_^

My new style:

That's very rough, and I didn't bother colouring it, so anything finished will be better. That's the result of about 10 seconds in MS Paint.

I've done an African Guy and an Australian Surfie Chick. I did the other guy because I already had a template and it just needed colour, and I did the woman as a template and decided to go with it.

And yes, I am aware that there are some touchups needed (I just noticed the girls stomach, it was originally going to be a shirt all the way down, which is why it bulges at the bottom), and no, they're not all going to be pointing, I'm just too lazy to redraw everything for sample characters.

The Nation of Islam guy is the best of those, though yeah, they do have a bit of a drawn-with-a-mouse look.

Yeah, he does need to be a little darker. I think if we get an Islamic person it shouldn't be sterotypical like Kaddar's "arabian"

Your new, original characters look much better than the initial Injokester offering. There's nothing "wrong" with the way your art looks. It's a style, and I like it. Now, you need to redo Injokester.

Before you get a ton of requests, see what you can do with me:

I'd greatly appreciate it.

Alright, I've remade Injokester. I did it a little differently, based on my Black Coat and Coffee phase...

I have only just now read this thread.

I like these characters. The art style kind of reminds me of Family Guy, I think. I like the African guy and the coffee-drinking version of Injokester the best; I think they provide the greatest variation from what we already have.

It is my recollection that DexX placed all of his artistic donations to this site in the public domain before he left, so you probably wouldn't need his permission to recycle any of it. But you should stick with your own style. Consistency of style has never been a high priority around here anyway. I guess using better graphics software could improve the way the characters look, but I don't mind them the way they are either.

I need a new motherboard for my computer at home, when I get that I'll get everything set up. Until then though I'm limited to paint, since I'm doing this at work and IT get antsy if you put anything on the computers that isn't supposed to be there.

Your art looks funny as fuck. I don't mean that in a bad way. It reminds me too a bit of Family Guy and even (somehow) of Hoppy & George! I like it. Keep at it.

I agree with thochaos. It does look quite a bit like Family Guy stuff. Which is good! I'd love to see what you can do with a pen, paper, and a scanner with photoshop to clean it all up.

They're getting there, but they are a little pixelated.

Also, the bugged-out eyes make everyone seem surprised. Works for the coffee guy, but everyone else looks wigged out. Suggest maybe giving them eyelids.

I think Brad's criteria for adding chracters is something like, "What can be done with this that can't be done with characters we already have?" so keep that in mind.

Unfortunately there's not much I can do about that until I get my computer fixed, but it shouldn't be too long now...

I did a couple of practice sits last night, covering movement and facial expressions, so I'll be changing a lot regarding the shape and size of the eyes.

That's cool, I'm making them for myself anyway, and most of what I've been doing is to replace existing characters I've used so I can remake all my comics with my own art. But since I'm doing this stuff I figured I'd show it around here and see if anyone wants any of it added.
