I've got a real rough beta of comic commenting online. If you're a donor, you should be able to comment on any of my comics.

http://www.stripcreator.com/comics/Brad

Feel free to try it out, I'm looking to get some more comments in there so I can test things. Please don't flood, I don't need any help testing that right now.

i went through on the early ones and did multiple things like rate and comment, or turn obscenity filter on/off and comment. i made my comment whatever i did. not sure if it will help, but can't hurt, right?

I like it, but I think the newest comments should be on the top of the list.

I disagree. One of the advantages of this format is the ability to have a conversation about one of your comics. The first to last format makes those easier to follow.

Hmmm, I just thought of something. If someone comments on your comics, you have no way of knowing and for someone like say, Kaufman, he'll never see a quarter of the comments on his comics. Would it be possible to have a log of some kind that you can look at to see the last 10 or so comments made on your comics?

a notification would be nice

Notification of some kind or a filter would be a great idea.

I previously suggested that comics with comments on them have a little asterisk beside the title in your pull-down menu or something. That might save there being a notification being created for every single comment made.

I've got to admit, I think this is a great and potentially funny idea.

Yeah I'm not sure how to do the notification. I could email the user after every comment, but I'd have to let people toggle that because some may not want to get emails every time someone writes a dopey comment.

I could do the comic counts next to the comic titles, but it would be hard for a user to track new comments, etc.

A page where you could browse all the comments on all your comics seems like possibly the best bet, though it's the most work for me.

If anyone has any other ideas, I'm open to them.

How about using the PM function (with a toggle) or perhaps something similar next to the PM notice at the top of the page like "You have X new comments" and when you click on that, it shows the links to the comics with new comments.

I've got to read the memos when they come out. I just noticed this! You are the bee's knees, Brad. And the dragonfly's scrote but that is another story!

So I turned on this feature. How do I notice if a particular comic gets comments. Is there a "new comments exist on these comics" view?

That's one of the things I'm stuck on right now that I have to figure out before I make it public. Right now I'm experimenting with comments pages:

This one sorta works, but it's quite ugly and hard to read. Trying to figure out what would work best.

What if you started with the section closed and you could let the user know something was new like you do in the forum.

Then when they open it they could get comments for that comic (newest on top I think). Also they could get a dropdown showing other comics with comments. New ones would have a star (or maybe a *) added to the comic title to show which ones had new comments since the last browser instance.

Yaknow, if you look up where it says, "(inbox: no new messages)" there's like a jillion room to the right of it where it could say, "(new comments)".

Although your lack of capitalization sickens me deeply.

squidrabies makes a good point. There's that big open space between the inbox and the site navigation that could be ultilized for comment notification.

I had typed up a real thorough response and then somehow I managed to misplace that window.

squidrabies & HCRoyall: That space will probably get used for that purpose. That was why I changed the way the inbox notification worked. But what if it says "10 new comic comments" and all the comments are on different comics -- when you click on the notification, where should the site take the user? Seems like they'd be expecting to see all the comments.

Spankling: Those are good ideas, but I have some technical nitpicks. New post tracking would be cool, but it's rough to implement on potentially thousands of items. The forums work by storing the time and date you last visited each forum in the user's browser. It's not a big deal because there are only 10-15 forums max. But if I had to store the last time users visited any of their comics, I'd run out of room as there's a pretty small limit to how much websites can store in browsers.

Showing the list in order of most recently commented is something I've been trying to get to work, but it's slow and a resource hog, especially on users who have tons of comics. It's probably not impossible, but it's definitely proving to be a pretty big challenge.

Maybe something could be added to one's user profile. You click the "new comments" thing and it takes you to your profile where there is a list of comics with new comments on them, you know, "ten most recent" type thing.

Probably part of your testing, but I noticed when I was flipping through the Brad comics today that the dates seem confused. Some of the comments said "Posted 8 months ago" when the comic was no more than 3 months old. When I posted a comment on the most recent one (Freakshow), it said "posted 1 second ago" which is about right. Just thought I'd make you aware.

Formatting is always the hardest fish to fry. I do like the idea of getting a PM with every comment, or even a CM (comment message), which could be a specialized type of PM.

I have no real complaints about this feature. I see a DELETE by each of the comments, though; is that a mistake or is that for moderators? Also, will people be able to delete comments by their own comics?

I think they should. The inevitable response is that people would have a hard time having a conversation if the stripper can control the flow like that, but I say if you want a conversation you should take it to the forums, not put it on an individual comic.
