Hi. I had an idea. For things you could add to the dialog fuction. Right now, it has two things. Dialog and thought. Neat. I was thinking you could add symbols to convey different emotions for when you want a character to react to something, but without having to actually say anything. Like a big exclamation point over his head. Or a big question mark. Or "blink blink" really small over his head. Or "?!". Or an idea lightbulb. Or "fap fap fap". Or spider-sense squiggles. Or stink lines. Or a tiny rain cloud. Or other things. I like it! I agree with myself!

If a "fap fap fap" thing created I'd make an entire series where at least 2 panels per comic were both characters doing that.

i totally dig your idea, calimary boy. i dig any improvements to this site, because its simply the best site on the internet. i wouldn't even mind it becoming a pay for site if that meant Brad could hire a couple of people to keep updating its magni-awesomeness

But, you know.. better looking.

You could just add a narrative caption which states, for example:

"In this panel, the bear has a large question mark hovering over his head."

But the bear wouldn't have a question mark hovering over his head. And that would confuse the reader. Possibly causing the reader to become despondent and commit suicide. My god, you're a heartless sonofabitch.

Then, perhaps the narrative caption could read:

"In this panel, you are to pretend that the bear has a large question mark hovering over his head." See? That wouldn't make anyone despondent, because people like to pretend!

I don't know how how to pretend.

Great, now I'm despondent. Thanks a lot.

I like the idea of above-the-head images. Though I'm not entirely sure how I'd implement them.

You couldn't put them in as images under the dialogue menu (with 'speech' and 'thought'), but have them disable the text box when chosen?

I could probably do that, yeah. If anyone wants to make up some decent looking things to go in there, I'll put it on my giant to-try-to-do list.

It should be at an odd angle. Question marks are funnier at a slightly odd angle. Also you're a lazy bitch.

I could throw some of these together.

As for how to incorporate it into the interface, I would suggest two radio buttons: "text" and "symbolic". Selecting "text" enables the usual speech and thought, and selecting "symbolic" enables a drop down list of options, such as "idea", "angry", "confused", etc.

Okay... so, an "idea" light bulb, an angry storm cloud thingy, a bunch of shocked exclamation marks, a bunch of confused question marks... anything else? I was thinking a kind of "pop" pictograph, showing someone realising something (you'd know what I meant if you saw it). Oh, how about a bunch of swearing-substitute symbols for the prudes?

Don't forget the tiny rain cloud. I'm thinking of creating an Indian character named Tiny Rain Cloud.

or a heart with an arrow through it

i'd really like a mushroom cloud, as in 'you just blew my mind'

made up a list of all the ones mentioned for convenience:

  • exclamation point
  • question mark
  • "blink blink" really small over character's head
  • ?!
  • idea lightbulb
  • fap fap fap
  • spidey sense squigglies
  • stink lines
  • rain cloud
  • angry steaming squiggly
  • "pop" pictograph, showing someone realising something
  • swearing-substitute symbols
  • floating hearts and/or heart with arrow through it
  • mushroom cloud

I'd actually like to see some sort of "action" bubble. Instead of using thought bubbles, y'know?

I was thinking about that, actually, types of bubbles other than speech of thought. The only practical one I could think of was the zig-zag electronic bubble, like when you see speech coming through a TV or a speakerphone. Pretty easy to implement - just a zigzag tail on the text balloon instead of the straight tail or the bubble tail.
