I just bought a 2 disc set of Billy Joel music, labeled "The Essential Billy Joel".

Perhaps it was naivete on my part, but I saw the word Essential and I automatically assumed it had Italian Restaurant on one of the discs.

It didn't. False advertising must stop! How can the music indusrty claim something is "The Essential Billy Joel" collection when it doesn't have Italian Restaurant?

Singles collections are supposed to have a band or artists big, well-known, bland, commercial songs on them. You need to buy the albums to get the really good tracks.

For example, no Billy Joel collection ever contains Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, Vienna, or All for Leyna, but they all have motherfucking Uptown Girl. *snarl*

Thankfully, this one did not. It did, however, include It's Still Rock And Roll To Me, which I have not seen on a previous collection.

I bought my mom I think that same collection. She only plays "Only the Good Die Young". I should have gotten her a single and saved my money. $25 for one song, sheesh.

I'm confused by the word "essential" occurring next to "Billy Joel" without the intervening infinitive "to avoid."

Technically the "essential" Billy Joel should contain no songs at all.

Why are you even buying Billy Joel and then telling people? This is like someone coming on here and complaining about the new anal beads they just bought.

I guess I don't see what's essential about it.
Hasn't he already done the nostalgia for being a teen from jersey bit a few times? I mean, in 75 i was a teen with my first girlfriend, living a stone's throw from jersey, and I have some fond memories mixed with the horror. He's a talented songwriter, if he could find someone else to sing them. His 'lullabye' when performed drunkenly at the local kareoke show can be very moving.
But I'm confused a) that this would speak to your generation b) that anybody would bother to buy music when it's free online and on the radio c) that a person joins the army, goes overseas to join in a conflict of dubious merit, so that they can - buy billy joell records? But then, 1) I understand that music is related to mating rituals and thus is important to someone in your age bracket and 2) I'm a curmudgeon, especially when it comes to spending money.

A bottle of white, a bottle of red
Perhaps a bottle of rose instead
We'll get a table near the street
In our old familiar place
You and I - face to face
A bottle of red, a bottle of white
It all depends upon your appetite
I'll meet you any time you want
In our Italian Restaurant.

Things are okay with me these days
Got a good job, got a good office
I got a new wife, got a new life
And the family is fine
We lost touch long ago
You lost weight I did not know
You could ever look so nice after so much time.

Do you remember those days hanging out at the village green?
Engineer boots, leather jackets and tight blue jeans
Oh, you drop a dime in the box play the song about New Orleans
Cold beer, hot lights, my sweet romantic teenage nights

Brenda and Eddie were the popular steadies
And the king and the queen of the prom
Riding around with the car top down and the radio on
Nobody looked any finer
Or was more of a hit at the Parkway Diner
We never knew we could want more than that out of life
Surely Brenda and Eddie would always know how to survive.

Brenda and Eddie were still going steady in the summer of '75
when they decided the marriage would be at the end of July
Everyone said they were crazy
"Brenda you know that you're much too lazy
and Eddie could never afford to live that kind of life."
Oh, but there we were wavin' Brenda and Eddie goodbye.

Well they got an apartment with deep pile carpets
And a couple of paintings from Sears
A big waterbed that they bought with the bread
They had saved for a couple of years
They started to fight when the money got tight
And they just didn't count on the tears.

And Rock and Roll!

Well, they lived for a while in a very nice style
But it's always the same in the end
They got a divorce as a matter of course
And they parted the closest of friends
Then the king and the queen went back to the green
But you could never go back there again.

Brenda and Eddie had it already by the summer of '75
From the high to the low to the end of the show
For the rest of their lives
They couldn't go back to the greasers
The best they could do was pick up the pieces
We always knew they would both find a way to get by
That's all I heard about Brenda and Eddie
Can't tell you more 'cause I've told you already
And here we are wavin' Brenda and Eddie goodbye.

A bottle of reds, a bottle of whites
Whatever kind of mood you're in tonight
I'll meet you anytime you want
In our Italian Restaurant.

Granted, I was born in 84, but my parents raised me on classic rock. All I heard growing up was music from the sixties and seventies. Hell, I didn't know who Nirvana was until I heard kids at school talking about how Cobain shot himself.

I know the feeling. I bought a Queen "Greatest Hits" album that somehow lacked Bohemian Rhapsody. HOW is a Queen CD lacking "Bohemian Rhapsody" a "Greatest Hits" album?!

the only way to have a complete Queen's greatest hits is to buy all their albuns.

They dont make rock bands nowadays as they used to...

Yes, but I'm pretty sure of the one he's referring too, and I believe it's basically a two disc set sold seperately.

The common Queen - Greatest Hits CDs are all single disc and run to three volumes, here in Oz anyway.

That's marketing for you. I know I can get certain books in the States for $7 American, and talk to friends in Europe only to find that the same book is sold over there in 2-3 parts, each part for the equivalent of $7-8 American.

the set you must get, re : Billy Joel, is The Greatest Hits discs 1,2 and the optional 3.

3 is late period mediocre Billy Joel (We Didn't Start The Fire, River of Dreams, etc.)

I kind of like We Didn't Start The Fire (which happens to be on this set I have), but unfortunately there are practically no online sites that deliver to APO addresses, and because my only good net connection is in the office I can't download music. Hence I am limited by the selection at the PX unless I ask family to look for an album for me.

Nope, nothing on the disc indicates that it's a 2 disc set. In fact, I found another greatest hits album with most of the flotsam taken out and replaced with somgs people have actually heard. I'm tempted to sell the store the CD I have and get their copy. (It's a used copy anyway).
