"What" you say? "Has DX gone mad?!" you question frantically, believing I've finally gone completely insane from drinking party liquor (see: paint thinner) and snorting cheese doodles.

Of course, being that it's been ages since I actually posted anything substantial on Stripcreator, the majority of you likely think I'm just batshit insane and are trying to figure out who the shit I am in the first place.

Those of you who know me are still boggled. Those of you who don't know me need to know a few things about me before I lose you. I am a metalhead, which is why the former still think I've finally snapped. In the time I've been visiting this site, I've changed a lot. I came here a younger, less-informed elitist asshole with no tolerance. I'd like to think that's changed a bit over the years.

So for the few still hanging on, know that I'm not insane, and I'm not admonishing ALL metal fans and metalheads out there. Just the elitist assholes who have nothing better to do than to bash on the more popular bands (like Dimmu Borgir or Slayer, for example) and consistently look down on people who like music that doesn't fit into their spectrum of good music.

At one point, I was one of these people, to an extent. I wasn't a super-elitist and still liked some of the more popular metal acts, but would treat fans of stuff like Korn and System of a Down like retarded monkeys. I still think these bands suck dirty anuses, but I also recognize that these are my opinions. I lean toward it being fact that the two mentioned are in no way metal, but that doesn't alter my perception of their quality and the tastes of their listeners. I don't like them, but if you do, bully for you.

I mention all of this because I really am a little nuts in that I think anyone gives a crap. I felt that everyone here should be informed of the insanity of just how deep elitism can go. I thought it quite important that you also all know that not all metalheads/black metallers are as retarded as this guy...

http://www.last.fm/user/Buffalohed/journal/

I would highly reccomend not spending too much time reading this dude's opinions (which he seems to think are facts). The "Bad Taste Part I" is what got me rampaging. I just can't believe that anyone who claims to be a metalhead could be *this* bad and *this* lacking in a sense of humor.

I still think it's a very well-executed troll.

Music is just stuff to listen to and if it stimulates your own wetware in a positive way, then it's good music. Unless it's Kanye West -- he objectively sucks. But I consider him the exception that proves the rule.

DX, i agree with you. metalheads (which i still qualify as) are some of the most vehement in their bashing not only of other music, but of other metal bands they don't like.

and like you, i was once much more inclined to tell someone not only how much a band they like sucked, but why. nowadays i just don't care what anyone listens to or how disagreeable i find it. if it makes them happy and keeps them off the streets for an hour or two, great.

i still delight in tormenting some of my friends about their musical tastes and have the added advantage that 99% of the people i meet have never even heard of most of the bands i listen to.

i will say however that with the style of metal i'm currently into, that Europeans blow American bands out of the water. sad but true.

METALHEADS are the most outpsoken elitist pricks of all music freaks? How about the advocates of the most boring genre of music on this planet? INDIE ROCK. Every single "indie rock fan" I know automatically bashes ANY form of music, no matter what the genre, that has had at least one song on the radio. Any music of mine that they do like is music that they "used to like" and claim not to like it anymore because "the band has gotten way too pop". If I tell them I've never heard of their favorite band, "The Flaming Ass Scandanavian Folk Trio from Kansas", they look at me as if I'm the biggest retard on this planet and scold me forever on how I need to improve my musical tastes as they hastily shove an LP in my face. And all of them seem to follow the general theorem that the less people who know of a band's existence, the better the band is. Have any of you ever heard of Rilo Kiley, Portugal The Man, or Of Montreal? I have. They fucking blow ass and all lack emotion all sound like a fucking drugged up hippie whining 'crytpic' lyrics into the microphone while playing some obscure instrument that no one outside of Eastern Europe can pronounce.

But that makes them 'different', so they must be good.

Frank, I'd say that being an indie music fan almost makes you need to be an elitist. Popularity basically destroys your favorite music when you're indie because the second a band gets popular enough and gets signed, that band is no longer indie. A lot of metalheads are just as bad as indie kids. They just wear more comfortable pants.

I've known a lot of metalheads who fear the idea of metal going mainstream. Sure, there is a valid concern here. Fame seems to wreck some metal bands. Look at metallica, possibly the most famous metal band in the last 20 years. And look at Ozzy! That man went a little nutty, but I still blame that on the drugs.

Other people cite bands like Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir as being the examples of "too popular for their own good". Personally, I think Dimmu Borgir's music became more interesting after fame, but that's just me.

I was going to write a much longer post, but I suck at collecting my thoughts so here it is summarized:

-There is such thing as good music, this is generally not the music on the radio and MTV and bars, people only listen to it because they are lazy, this means that everyone who actualy likes good music has to listen to it all the time and as such form an animosity towards it.

i think absolutism in general blows goats, which i'd say elitism is a shade of. both the obvious absolutism of "YOU SUCK IF YOU LIKE THIS" (which really means you suck if you don't like and dislike what i like), and the more subtle smug smiling "You're a retard for thinking that, but i'll keep quiet and smile contentedly."

it's like it's inherent in people to think that someone disagreeing with you somehow threatens to change the objective reality of the thing you're disagreeing on. it would be smarter to start considering people's opinions as telling you more about the person who has it than the thing the opinion is about.

that said though, a little bit of absolutism is needed in conversation. if everyone was just all "you're entitled to your opinion," there wouldn't be any real discussion. everyone would basically tune out everyone that didn't agree with them and only listen to those that did. then again, that's how most people are anyway.

i'm including myself in this too btw. even though i logically know the truth of relative values, i guess i still don't emotionally. i can't count how many times when twi was looking to buy a car recently, i said "that's crazy" or "don't go look at that one"

I used to be a major indiepop purist.  I grew up.  And while I still think Talulah Gosh is the best goddamned band nobody ever heard of, I'm equally comfortable touting my totally non-ironic love of 80s Hall & Oates.

In my world, Jandek can peacefully co-exist with Wings.

It's all true, what DX has said.  It's why as much as I like the music I really haven't ever been able to get into the larger metal community, such as it is.  I haven't had time or a desire to engage in media elitism since I was a teenage video game snob, much less involve myself in a whole society based on it when I don't really share much in common with a lot of them besides a few bands.

I'm from the old school of Metal era where Motorhead "Lemmy is GOD!", Ozzy, Preist, Maiden, MANOWAR, Early Motley Crue, Early Def Leppard and of course Sabbath were the only things on the menu. Everbody was cool with each other and you had common ground with allot of new Metalheads you met anywhere in the world.

Then the mid to late 80's came out and the lines were clearly drawn... Death, G.L.A.M., Speed and Black Metal were the sides you had to choose. This really pissed me off because my parents couldn't tell me what to listen too, but a bunch of assholes thought they could? I lost allot of friends at that time because they were sheep and felt they had to listen to one kind to be "Truly Metal". It was bad enough having to fight Preps, Jocks and Club Guidos on a daily basis for wearing a Metal Band's shirt when we were all just Metalheads, But then I had to add fucktard eliete metal jackasses to the list of people I had to punch in the throat.

It got to the point where I walked away from music all together, and concentrated on just horror movies for years. Then VH1 started playing all of the old Metal Videos and Behind the musics and I started to pay attention to what was out there again. But it just pissed me off that the whole bullshit "You can't listen to that if if you listen to this" game is still going on!

As in, since I like some Slipknot songs I'm not allowed to like songs from the band HIM. Well fuckt that running! I will continue to listen to what I feel like till I get my room at the Dirt Hotel. Oh and here's another one that'll probably revoke my "True Metal Pass", I like allot of different styles of music I've heard over the years!

So if I'm not in favor with the fucktard eliete of Metal I really don't give a shit because their all gimps anyway.

Good fuckin' topic!

Precisely.

No, I'm serious. The elitists constantly squabble about how the band they just heard about from somewhere in Greenland with five fans and ten copies of their 5 song 8-track is sooooo much better than the other guy's band, despite the fact that the former is just two guys smashing their guitars into a glacier while a monkey humps a bass drum in a surprisingly rhythmic fashion.

I guess I had a rare and lucky experience with Metalheads then. The only real metalhead I've ever known was my friend Chris from uni. Long dark hair, beard and never without wearing a dark hoodie of some obscure German band.

But he was actually really cool about it, my tastes are far more mainstream than him, and when I told him I liked System of a down, he just shrugged and said "Each to their own". He'd often let me listen to some of the stuff he was currently listening to, and for the most part I loved the guitars (especially the solo's) but despised the vocals (GRAAAWW GURRGGA BRAWWAAAW!").

So nice metalheads do exist.
