Plot according to IMDB: "A chronicle of the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members. "

I'm surprised I'm the one opening this movie up for discussion here. I've never seen a Star Wars movie, bits and pieces sure, but I have no idea what's really going on in those movies. However, I've seen every star trek movie, and will certainly be seeing this one as well.

Release date is scheduled for Christmas this year.

Discuss/debate.

Here's a recent AICN update.

The second source cited doesn't make much sense, but the first source doesn't bode well for the movie at all. This is a screenplay that needed to be written by people who knew Trek lore inside and out, and, above all, were Trek fans. I'm going to start getting ready for a big disappointment, and if it turns out to be good, it'll be a pleasant surprise.

Here is an informative thread on the CHFB that's been going on for awhile.

All I need to know to know that it'll probably suck?  Tyler Perry's in it.  Yes, that's right, Tyler Perry... as in Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?, Tyler Perry's Medea's Family Reunion, and Tyler Perry's Total Bullshit That Holier-Than-Thou Black Ladies Will Love.

I'm kind of excited about Zachary Quinto and Simon Pegg being in it, since I'm a big fan of Quinto in "Heroes" and Pegg in "Spaced" and "Shaun of the Dead" (and his guest-starring roles on "Doctor Who" and "Black Books"). Given the other info I've read about the film, I'll probably wait for reviews before I see it, though.

I'd actually see it just for Simon Pegg.

Ugh-a-dug-dug. James Kirk is Horatio Hornblower, not Van Wilder.

I'm probably one of the only people on the site that would get that reference to Hornblower.

Really? It does seem a bit obscure, but there was the recent Russell Crowe movie, and hardcore Trekkies should know the character was based on Hornblower.

Of course, I'd expect professional writers working on a studio movie to know this, too. My James Kirk was offended philosophically by the KM scenario. This one doesn't sound capable of such a state.

Hmm... has the "Hornblower" drama series not made it to your country? The ITV channel over here in the UK made a drama series from the books, and it was very good. Hornblower was played by the guy who starred in the recent movie "Amazing Grace" (concerning the life of Samuel Wilberforce who was instrumental in the abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire). He was also in "Titanic" looking for survivors at the end.

Well, I do know that Hubert Horatio Hornblower was one of Jimmy Carter's favorite politicians.

But it's true that any old school Trekker will recognize the reference immediately.

I read the books. I've heard of the series, but also heard that while very good it doesn't stay very true to the books it depicts.
