The airline only let the more "normal" anime club members onto the plane.  Later on, they wished they had used stricter criteria.

-people were remarkably indulgent of the poor culturally disassociated young man, and this brought him comfort on his long flight home. it also didn't hurt that he'd just won 1.2 million and his third world series of poker bracelet

-unfortunately for Phan, "Where is the restroom please?" in Japanese sounded exactly like the english "FIVE TABS OF ACID AND PUT ME ON A PLANE TO THE OUTBACK"
