As for newbies, I take them as I see them. TheElPaso seems pretty cool, so I have no problem with him right now. ElvisHitler seems like a bit of a dick, and his strips are truly awful, so I am thinking troll, along with a few others. Kitty's behaviour is just too much like a guy pretending to be a girl trying to fool lonely virginal geeks into embarrassing themselves. Then again "her" strips do read like those written by a somewhat naive girl. *shrug* I am holding back final judgement, but I smell a troll.

WHat you have to remember is that "Newbie Bursts" can occur for many reasons, one of which is certainly a multi-profile troll. However, another very common one is another online community all becoming aware of SC.com at once, such as a web board, online gaming community, newsgroup, ICQ channel, whatever. These people will not necessarily know each other. For instance, they might all read the same web comic. I myself came here because Tycho of Penny Arcade knows Brad personally, and gave this site a plug in the PA news page.

Anyway, I just mean to say that it is smart to be suspicious of newbies who seem to be unusually annoying or stupid, as they may be trolls, but you should not be unkind to newbies just because they are new. You were all newbies once, and one of you was a troll. The old saying about treating others as you would like to be treated comes to mind.

I sat back, read the forums for a while, then just jumped straight in and recieved absolutely no "newbie" abuse from anyone, so I guess I'm lucky and should really just treat the newbies the same, but come on, there's a definite family tree with these newbies, all it takes is for one of the many forms to win a contest or something and we could have some unneccesary grief!

I don't really remember being a newbie. I think someone actually emailed be and asked me to come to the forums at some point, and that's why I went to them. I actually had probably 40 comics by the time I was in the forums. Hell, for a while I never realized I could fight with someone without making crappy comics about them!

I made a fairly discreet entrance as well. I lurked for about three months, watched Crabby and Diesel make their auspicious debuts, and just sneaked in with a comic contest entry. Which won.

I came in on 10/2/2001, made a few strips, and got some positive feedback (thanks, DexX!).

Then I asked a question which wasn't in the FAQ about how the titles are calculated (e.g., "Stripcreator Regular"), that somehow inspired a great ladyj rant about newbies.

If we could search the forums (hey, there's an idea!) I could find it. Maybe Brad could make it the first thing a newbie sees when creating their first strip.

I got here sometime in sept.
