Actually, that isn't completely accurate...

Firstly, the biggest international company that markets anime of all types to Western countries is called Manga Entertainment.

Secondly, the general sense of the words that seems to be most common these days is that "anime" refers to the nicer stuff, like The Castle of Cagliostro and Sailor Moon. These days, "manga" usually refers to the more violent and sexual types of anime.

Yeah, I know technically manga is printed and anime is animated, but meanings evolve...

Apparently "manga" means "irresponsible" or something very similar. Manga comics are considered to be "irresponsible books". The term "anime" was coined back in the seventies (sixties?) for the animated cartoons Japanese studios atarted to put out, like Astroboy, Battleship Yamato (aka Star Blazers), and Battle of the Planets (aka some Japanese name I always forget). When anime in the style of manga comics started being made... well, it just confused everybody.

Then there's hentai... :)
