...and it wasn't even gotten in a fun way.

Gabe, I have Nimda. *weep*

Were you able to salvage anything? Is it safe to burn some files I want to keep to a CD or something and reintroduce them after I reformat, or do I have to kiss everything goodbye, or what? Is there a reliable fix? This kind of stuff frustrates the living fuck out of me and I've had Sam taking care of a lot of it, but the fixes he ran and everything didn't get rid of it. It's still making .eml files.

Damned good thing I never use outlook express or outlook and I have no address book.

Symantec has some free tools that you can use to clean it and repair some of the damage here:

Nimda got into a customer site of mine, and we had to disconnect them from the net for a week to totally eradicate it and get the systems patched.

I was at a point where I was going to reformat anyway, and I didn't have much stuff I really cared about. I think I got them all burned ahead of time, since I was planning on wiping out the hard drive.

You might as well try burning stuff just in case, though.

I'm just worried about the possibility of reintroducing the virus back into a clean system.

I too am at a stage where I need to reformat. My registry is all muddy. However, I also have years worth of text files, word files, image files, etc. that I am emotionally attached to. Some of them made the trip over several jumps from PC to PC and were originally created in a win 3.x environment on my second or third computer (if you count my commodore as my first).

If we didn't know that this was about computers, the title of this thread would sound like a serious problem.

Yay! You got the extremely apparent double entendre in the subject line! *applause*

(See, now I gave you the clap.)

My machine is being reformatted now. I'm using Sam's machine, which is set up with dvorak keys. The typing is slow going.

The double entendre would have been more apparent if you had written, "I got that virus Gabe has on his dick."

I thought Gabe had a PC, not a Wang.

I think I beat this joke long enough.

But that's what I always say.

If you learned to use it, you'd type ten times faster than all the poor suckers who can't use a dvorak board.

Sorry, I'm a shameless promoter of dvorak keyboards.

I have nothing against dvorak, just like I have nothing against touch typing. However, in order to properly learn either, I'd have to slow down and exhibit discipline. I hate slowing down, and I have no discipline. So here I am, capped at about 65 wpm at my best in a sort of speed hunt-and-peck using 2 or 3 fingers on each hand.

My machine is back up, and so empty that it seems to echo.
