A historian is helping a little girl learn about ancient civilizations ,so she will be prepared to travel back in time.
What can you tell me about ancient civilizations ? I want to go back in time to the 1500s , but I don't know much about that time period .
Ok , I can tell you a lot .The main civilizations were Incas , Mayas , and Aztecs .
Oh ! I think I've heard of Aztecs before , tell me about Aztecs .
Well , they were conquered by Spanish conquistador , Hernan Cortes and a small army of 500 men and 16 horses.
Tell me more!
Very well, Aztec ruler , Moctezuma heard about a ship , and sent spies to find out about it . Moctezuma had never seen horses before ,so he thought Hernan Cortes was a god.

Yes, When Cortes and the army got to Tenochtitlan , the magnificent Aztec city ,Moctezuma welcomed them,but Spanish soldiers killed some Aztecs and a battle began.
Oh no !
Moctezuma was killled and Native Americans helped Cortes and his army conquer the Aztecs.

Europeans sailed west across the Atlantic Ocean , hoping to reach Asia , which was rich in expensive goods such as spices and silk.
Ok
They didn't arrive in Asia ,instead they were in America ! Spain and Portugal became fierce rivals.They tried to stop each other from claiming land.
There was another battle?!

They created a treaty ,agreement between two or more countries.They called it the Treaty of Tordesillas.This treaty initiated the Line of Demarcation .
What is the Line of Demarcation ?
It's an imaginary line that separated the rights of Spain and Portugal to settle and trade . Spain settled west of the line , and Portugal settled to the east .

Ok , Spain divided its territory into provinces and setting up a strong government . The most powerful citizens lived in the center of Lima . Mestizos lived on the outskirts of the city .
Native Americans continued to live on the countryside . The Spanish forced them to work on haciendas .
What are Mestizos and haciendas ?
A Mestizo is a person of mixed Spanish and Native American descent . A hacienda is a plantation owned by Spaniards or the Catholic Church .

What were the effects of European rule ?
Well , Spain gave its settlers rights to demand taxes or labor from Native Americans . Native Americans died from overwork , malnutrition , and European diseases.
