Mr. Parsons notices the clack-clack approach of a sightless man as he gets out of his hotel. Then, a blind beggar tries to sell him a cigarette lighter, but he refuses and says that he doesn't smoke.

The beggar then tells Mr. Parsons that he can gift the lighter to someone and also, he shouldn't mind helping out a poor guy. So, Mr. Parsons agrees.

| But you probably know a lot of people who do; you can give it to them. Plus, it won't really hurt you to aid someone, mister? | |

Mr. Parsons feels pity for all blind creatures and asks the beggar about his blindness. Thus, the beggar begins telling his tragic life story.
