Hey Alice, do you know what a shield volcano is?
Sure I do Jim! A shield volcano is volcano that has a steady amount of basaltic lava flowing from it. It's formed from the slow build up of lava that is trapped under the Earth's surface.
But Alice, how does the lava create a volcano? Are cinder cone volcanoes any different?
The lava cools after each time that the volcano erupts. That slowly builds up rock until you have a volcano shape! Cinder cone volcanoes are very steep and explode with glass, lava, cinder, ash & rock
Well, I have to go Alice but I have one last question. What is a composite cone volcano then? I heard that they explode with ash and lava like the cinder cones.
That's true, Jim. Composite cones are also steep at the summit like cinder cones. The difference is that they alternate between erupting lava and ash. It was good to see you again Jim! I hope I helped
